If you enter a helmet thread on BF not expecting debate it's your own fault when your head starts to hurt! :p

I took the time to read your post. PLEASE take the time to read my original post. It is number 1 on the first page! This is not a helmet debate. I wear one, end of freaking story! My question is not should I or should I not.

yes, I understand. You wear a helmet now but you are wondering about a differant helmet for more protection when cycling in winter.

I was providing a differant POV to the poster of the video. My comment about my brother not wearing a helmet was an attempt to support my point regarding people that are reluctant to wear one and how things are changing.

True, I did contribute to pushing this thread off topic. My apologies.

To reiterate, and on topic this time, my opinion / advice would be for you to stick with a bicycle helmet and use various head accessory options to provide protection against the cold, instead of getting a second helmet.

Thank you for chiming in. I appreciate it! If I can ask on a side question, what studded tires you running?

I ride Nokian W106 35mm studded on my Surly Cross Check. No complaints, they have lasted 4 winters so far, no studs lost. They are the only kind I've used so I can't compare to any other brands.

I too have Nokian Studded tires, now they are on a bike,
left as is between sub zeroC days.. springs run across the roads all year long,
the frozen stream can have your wheel go out from under you , quickly..

chef , it's not either or, but Both.. get that second helmet for the winter,

And in a year or 2 as all helmet materials age in time, get the airy feeling one.

Thank you for the point of clarification.

You are wrong. Crashes are rarely random, and almost always have a non-random cause. When was the last time the FAA, upon examining a plane crash, just threw up its hands and said, "oh, it was just a random crash! Sorry guys!"

No. Airplane crashes are due to pilot error, maintenance error, or another preventable cause.

Same with bicycle crashes. The overwhelming majority of them have a cause, and the most common cause is one form or another of rider error.

So do you plan your crashes? "Oh, it's Tuesday, I think I'll have a go at throwing myself to the ground." Crashes...and flat tires...aren't planned events. You can't schedule them, you can't plan them in advance, and you can't even know for sure if you are in one until you are laying on the ground. If you can't plan or schedule one, they are random events that occur...well...at random. Just because they have a cause doesn't mean they aren't random. Even if they occur due to rider error.

I wear a light weight and well ventilated helmet most of the time but have no illusions about how much protection it will give my melon in anything more than a minor thump to the noggin type accident.
That said, I have been thumped on the noggin a few times without a helmet on and it would have been quite nice to have been wearing one.

The helmet in discussion here looks like it would make me so overheated I would probably pass out half way home and hit my head.
