I was given a bike

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=262565 I was given this bike by one of the co-owners of the company I work for. The story is it's been hanging for over a year in the warehouse, and the manager suggested to him that I would get better use out of it than it just hanging there. Sweet action. I was riding around on a 1988 Raleigh Technium MTB that needed serviced desperately, but I have no money for it this month, and my bike is my car. Needless to say this is a nice windfall.
On edit: Oh yeah it's a giant escape. While it's not what I was leaning toward for my next bike, it is perfect for a new all-rounder/city bike. And who can beat free?

Very cool, looks like its in good shape and the price was right.

SCORE!!

I love Techniums (see avatar)
For anything but hard off road use that should be a sweet riding and dependable machine.

You have awesome boss! Congrats.

rumrunn6 07-21-12 10:01 AM

yeah sounds like a positive work environment. do a payback and bring in a dozen donuts for everyone. and/or buy a meal gift certificate at a local restaurant and give it to the guy who gave you the bike, and maybe a dunking donuts $10 card for your boss. also be sure to give it back when you replace it.

osephjey 07-21-12 02:20 PM

Thanks people! I will make sure and do the donuts idea, they love donuts ;). Oh and I fully intend on riding the Shi poopy out of this thing now that I've altered the setup the way I want it. :thumb: Maybe this was God, or just a random act of kindness, or both idk. It's just nice to be surprised by something with no expectations of something in return.

You just got handed a free $4-500 dollar bill and a perfect commuter. Does it fit? right size?

It's slightly on the large side, (I'm 5'4" bike is 19" size med) I had to take off the stem extender and lower the seat, but so far no discomfort. I am digging the 35c tire size, (fat franks on raleigh, see avatar),although they are Kendas. I've got a pasela tg on the way for the rear. The front will have to wait, but I think it will be fine as there is almost no visible tread wear. The rear is a different story ;) and I won't feel completely comfortable until I get that flat protection on the rear. SO far so good.

Making the extra effort to be a decent human being has a way of coming full circle (as does being a total turd, but that is another subject).
Recently helped an elderly fella who had locked himself out of and his panicked dog into his truck I noticed when I rode up to work.
Got a hanger and popped it open (no big deal) and the guy was profoundly grateful and we struck up a conversation about my bike.
He told me he used to ride before having a severe stroke and was about to take his old bike to the dump to make room in his shed and I could have it if I wanted it.
I said sure, expecting a dead old Huffy but when I got to his place the next day he gave me this.... :)

Holy crap, I'm going to have to start carrying a coat hanger on my bike, now. Nice!

Got the hanger at work. We were in the parking lot.
Not sure how I could have done that with just the stuff on my bike.

He was going to dump that thing? That must have been some stroke... he obviously forgot how good of a bike it was.

It had a broken spoke on each wheel and was pretty grubby but I think it probably bothered him to keep seeing it and know he could not ride it. I can sure understand that.
He seemed genuinely thrilled that I was going to give it an overhaul and put it to good use.
I ran into Al about a week ago. His eyes really lit up when I told him the bike was back in service and fits me like a glove.
