movable cable stops?
 

I have a Shimano Nexus 7 internal hub purchased on craigslist. It has this super long cable connecting to the shifter. My bike has a cable stop on the chainstay for what was downtube shifters. Does anyone know of a way to attach a cable stop to the downtube, probably where the shifters were, so I can get rid of this cable mess?

Clamp on cable stops, available in various diameters, silver or black, single or double cable stop. Google for more choices, QBP seems to only have these in stock presently:

Older bikes had stops that would slip around the downtube as you describe and get tightened with a screw. Ask an LBS, a bike coop or look at bikes at a thrift store. My two 10-speeds both have them.

6'7", or 2 meters. Inseem is 37". This bike fits great with a seat tube center to center of 69cm/27". However, the larger bike frames tend to loose rigidity. They really need larger diameter bars and slightly different geometry. I am saving up for one of these:

There are a lot of advantages to running the cable the way old Three Speed cables run: to a (movable) stop on the top tube (Sturmey Archer calls these a Fulcrum Clip and Fulcrum Sleeve), then the bare cable runs over a pulley wheel at the top of the seat tube and then down the seat stay to the hub. You can do this on a Nexus 7 or 8 if you have the correct anti-rotation washers. But I have had a hard time finding them.

I think if you use the left washer on the right side and vice-versa you'll end up with the arm pointing up at a 45 degree angle, - if that's what you're looking for.

In my case, the reason I chose an IGH is for winter and in that case it's better to run full cable housing. There are cable guides (as opposed to cable stops) that you can purchase to help with the cable run.

I had the same dilemma when building up my wife's Soma mixte frame with a Nexus 8 IGH. I didn't like the idea of a continuous run of cable housing from the shifter to the hub, and, let's face it, zip ties are ghetto. So, I just used the stock downtube shifter boss to mount an adjustable cable stop, and used the frame's existing bottom bracket derailleur cable guide to locate the cable to the hub, just as if I were running a derailleur cable. Shimano warns against this practice, but that's hogwash. If done correctly, there shouldn't be enough variation in cable tension from frame flex to cause any shifting issues.

Since I had one leftover shifter boss, I used it to mount a bell.

Not to hijack the thread, but what is that black coil running from the downtube to the fender in that picture? Some sort of spring to help return the front wheel to center?

I've use the modern aluminum clamp-on stops and they worked well with a sturmey archer hub.... few sizes, black and silver.
