New city. Looking at commutability.
 

I'm moving to a new city very soon and in my apartment search I'm looking at distances from my new job location. Luckily just about everything I've found is within easy bike commuting distance, i.e. under 4 miles, with several within 2 miles. :thumb:
How many have had the luxury of being able to do this? I'm pretty happy since my current cummute is 10 miles one way which is more than I'm currently able to do by bike.

I wish I could live within 10 miles of work.

I work in downtown Dallas, and everything is way too urban for me.

For me it has been:

PA =14 miles one way
VT = 12 miles one way
FL = 8 miles one way
KY = 4 miles one way :thumb:

I like riding so it doesn't matter, but it is nice to be able to be home in a short time.
Dont have to carry as many tools 'n stuff, either. :)

Man, that's good. My commute is 18mi one way, I'm working on doing it more than twice a week.

13 miles was the sweet spot for me. 2 miles sounds kinda short. ideally you should have a small handful of roads with few turns and plenty of shoulder where the traffic is never moving over 30 mph. good luck!

Well, due to some lemony snickets i have changed commutes 4 times in the last 2 1/2 years. First was 10 miles, then 12.5, then 13.5, and now 9.5. All with varying terrain. My current commute takes me through the hood for almost it's entirety. I was afraid to drive through this side of town, but as I am car free I had no choice when I took this warehouse job. I don't get messed with surprisingly. I do hear the odd shout, but I can't tell if it's at me so I keep my eyes ahead and keep pedaling.I do have a brinks lock at the end of my cable, I tell myself that I'll use it as melee weapon for comfort. I have come across several other bike commuters so maybe people are used to seeing it more. I also seem to be the only one willing to do it in the street.

I have more of a unique problem. I live in a town just outside of Memphis, and I work in another town farther away from Memphis. I love the Memphis area, but I also love my job (not too many can say that eh? :thumb:). Memphis is much more bike friendly than where I live now, but it would also be much farther from work. As it is now it would be 14.4 miles one way to commute to work by bike, and the only roads are hilly, 2-lane roads with no shoulder. But then if I moved closer to work I would then be farther from Memphis, from family and friends, my church, etc.

Sort of a catch-22 for me.

I live in a very bike unfriendly city, but my job is about 5 miles away. The grocery store and a few restaurants are within a few miles as well, so I get around by bike a decent amount. I still do a fair bit of driving since a lot of the specialized stores aren't really bike accessible due to road configurations. I don't like living more than 10 miles away from work, anyway. Really long commutes are a bad idea in general, IMO.

3.24 miles one way. Have to take a longer route home to keep in shape.

While in some ways it would be nice to be closer to work, I am really happy with my current 7-7.5 mile commute route. In fact if anything I wish it was longer, something on the order of 9 or 10 miles one way. A bike friendly committee will be a big factor in my next move (hopefully to a new party of the country once I finish grad school), but I would honestly be disappointed, I think, if I moved to a place where my commute were only a couple miles, especially since I often am unable to carve out time for other riding than commuting. I'd be forced to turn my two mile commute route into an eight mile route! :-)

My commute is 3.2 miles one way, and going into work it's down a nice gentle grade, and the prevailing winds are usually at my back.

Of course this means that my commute HOME is up a grade into the headwinds, but I'll be taking a shower and going right to bed when I roll in so that doesn't bother me.

Current commute is 3.75 miles each way with one medium hill - shoulder or bike lane most of the way - pretty scenery - can not complain. Go for it!

Being a consultant, my commute changes every few months. Usually it's between 4 and 8 miles each way. The 8 mile routes are nice during the summer months, but a little long in sub-zero weather when the wind is screaming.

Commute is 5 or 10 miles, depending on where I get off the commuter train. Lots of stuff within 5 flat miles from work. Lots of stuff within 5 pretty hilly miles from home.

My commute is 8 miles with 6.5 from home to the Metro Train station (fold bike), ride the train for 11 miles (unfold bike) ride to work is 1.5 miles.

The train takes me over "the hood" but of course many hood residents ride the train too. So far, no problems, in fact everyone has been polite.

I commute Mon./Wed./Fri. since I have club training rides on Tues. and Thur. Would like not to have to ride the train (which would mean I wouldn't have to ride a folder), but the extra time and "the hood" ride have gotten the thumbs down from my wife.
