Anyone else commutes on a race bike?
 

After seeing some of the pictures in the Commuter Bicycle Pics I feel awkward using my Fuji SST 2.0 to get to/from work...

Dunno if it's "race" enough for you, but I do my commuting on a schwinn tempo...

Sometimes if the weather is nice and I don't have to carry anything I will ride my Merckx Titanium AX, but I usually commute on my Soma.

Quite a few road bikes in the bike shed at work including one particularly exotic one which I looked up out of curiosity and found it had an rrp of $5000 or around there so can't see why you would feel awkward about commuting on a racer.

i usually keep only one bike and use it for commute and rides. right now it's 15lb trek madone, before that i commuted on steel schwinn peloton (still regret selling it), orbea onix, blue rc7, etc. all picked on CL used

Sometimes I commute on my racy bike. Normally I like to carry at least my lunch though, and I don't like backpacks, so I take my commuter.

for about a month, maybe more, I've been commuting on my CAAD10.
I haven't owned a car for about 10 years now.
I've used a variety of bikes for all sorts of things.

commuting on the road bike, I try to limit what I have to carry.

just this week I was pleasantly surprised to discover that 28c tyres fit with room to spare on the CAAD10
combined with a set of Williams 30x, its a pretty solid "fast bike" as well as very doable as a commuter.

Crud Roadracer MK2 fenders barely fit on my commuting bike with 25c tires. Does that count as being 'race'y?

On really nice days I'll take my ancient 'race' bike (an 80s Nishiki Olympia) on my commute... but it spoils me... it makes my commute too quick and easy. ;)

I'm fortunate to live within 5 miles from work.
so I like to ride about an hour or two before work, maybe hit the gym at work, shower then clock in, depending on the shift that I'm scheduled for.

today, I clocked in at 6am, so I rode for just over an hour thru Pebble Beach.

I used to commute on my Tempo before I got a dedicated commuting bike. Now it's my back up bike, or my "oh **** I should have left 10 minutes ago!" bike.

Most days during the summer. Especially if I'm planning to hit one of the group rides like I did today.

Notice that I have a frame pump, saddle bag, and training wheels, so it's not like it's all raced out. On the other hand, I did ride my race wheels to work the other day just to test out my glue job.

I commuted on my "race" bike the other day. Had to take it into the office because I left my U-lock at home. Not awkward at all. It actually allowed me to take a singletrack detour on the way home. WIN!

Giant anthem 2 is my to work and back bike. know as midnight. nothing 'awkward' about it. I like the suspension and a bike without it just doesn't feel right to me. Tho I've never riden a road bike so I don't really know what its like. I would bet anything sence I can almost do 30 on my Mtn bike that I could keep up with traffic if I want. I should go to the bike store and test ride one. Just to see what it is like.

I've raced on my commute bike. Does that count?

+1...it depends on what I have to get to work with. On a day where I want to go riding after work, and I'm leaving the laptop behind, I do like commuting on road bikes. I find it especially fun to use the Titanio and its 19c Tufo tubulars. Those are definitely entertaining on city streets, and you learn to improve your bike handling skills in a hurry.

I commute on a road bike. Many commuters in the area also do the same. It helps since the distance is long and it's also fun.

I've been commuting regularly for 8 years and road bikes have made something of a comeback over that period. I see a lot more people commuting on them then I used to. Only a small percentage though are on what I would consider an actual racing bike.

In my case, I used to ride a rigid framed mountain bike to work then switched to an old road bike for training when I was talked into doing a triathlon. I've been using a road bike for commuting ever since (except for winter) because I really enjoyed it. My current road bike is more race worthy but still budget oriented. There's a few other people at work that commute similar bikes. There's one guy in the building who would commute on his tri-bike now and then.

When I first started participating the commuting forum 5 years ago, there was a much larger, or at least much more vocal, anti-road bike contingent than there is today.

I seem to remember spending a lot of time explaining that not every road bike is a racing bike. Further, even if people wanted to commute on a racing bike there's nothing wrong with that either.

I commuted on a De Bernardi Italian racing bike for the first 2-3 years. I picked up the frame for a great price and had it built with spare parts I had on hand. It worked well using a Carradice bag to carry my gear, but I eventually replaced it with a touring bike and then a sport tourer. The main shortcoming of the De Bernardi was the lack of clearance for larger tires and fenders. I managed to squeeze some 25s on the frame and used SKS Raceblade fenders when needed, but the fenders tended to rub. I also commuted one summer on my Eddy Merckx Corsa 01 but it had the same issues. Now commuting on a Salsa Casseroll and Waterford RST-22, both sport tourers, and they are much more practical -- but I still ride the De Bernardi sometimes on days when rain looks extremely unlikely.

My official commuter is a CX bike, but I love commuting on my CAAD on nice days. My ride is such that only a small portion is in the city, so I actually get the benefits of the light weight and stiff frame out on open trails and roads. Only real downside is that I have to use a backpack, but most days I pretty much carry just my lunch, so it's not like I'm hauling my wardrobe around.

I couldn't do it! The ride was so harsh--I felt every single bump and the LBS swears the bike only takes 23 tires.
The speed---oh the speed-- I recently crashed and was happy I was on my beater and not the Trek 2.1.

Almost race type bikes if the weather/ conditions are good.
The difference in speed is remarkable. My commute takes about 75 min. on the hybred fenderbeast and 50 min. on the skinny tire bike.
