I wouldn't fight upgrading the seatpost unless its a slippery slope for you. I love the geometry of those old frames. Looks like a nice beater. They don't have to look like total crap.

With me it will start off with an innocent seat post and end with a set of Campy Record hubs. :D

The Greasy Pig is officially ready for my Monday commute, if you can call 8 min. a commute.
Went for a little zip down the road and back. I describe this bikes ride as........stately. :D
Actually not bad for what it is. Kind of like riding the pedal version of a Lincoln Town Car. :p

If only it weren't so dog gone ugly.

My #2 beater. This is the bike I ride in bad weather, and the one I that I will lock up. It is an old rusty 1986 Raleigh Gran Prix, 531 frame, and it has a sweet ride. I just keep the chain oiled, and air in the tires. This bike is almost UNSTEALABLE!! ;)

First commute on The Greasy Pig yesterday.

Handlebars suck. They are just not right for this frame geometry so I installed some more upright ones. Much better.
The el cheapo plastic platform pedals may be rustproof but they are kind of slick when wet, which will be a lot around here come winter. I replaced them with alloy ones with nice grip teeth.
Riding again today and if the changes are keepers I'll post a pic.

It's only 3.5 miles between my home and work but that doesn't mean my commute can't be 10-15 miles. Take the long way around. ;)

I think you might want to put a carbon drop bar on with some nice Di2 shifters plus some time carbon pedals:)

And a Brooks saddle for good measure. :D

A bike without a Brooks is like one without handlebars. ;)

I have been using an old Diamondback Ascent (1991 vintage) converted to a single-speed to commute in bad weather and Minnesota winters. It has been great. Reliable, low maintenance, and cheap. What more can you ask for?

Well, I missed riding my Shogun and parked the Beater. One of my new co-workers was chatting with me about wanting to start riding so I gave The Pig to him. Came in the other day all agiggle about how fun it is to ride.
Another member of the rolling cult is born. :D
