To my credit, I have yet to be passed by anything on training wheels or handlegrip tassles, but that time may be coming....

The hill heading up to my house is about a quarter-mile at 6-8% grade then it turns and goes up 12-14% for another 200 yards or so. This is definitely a workout, but I feel like I've been getting better at it. At least, I did feel that way until last night.
Last night, as I was riding up the 8% section, a woman on the sidewalk ran past me like I was standing still. :twitchy: The computer said I was going 5.9 mph at the time, so she was definitely hauling. I caught up to her at the bend, but she was turning around to go back down the hill. Has anyone else had an experience like this, or is it just me? |
I used to be a serious runner putting in 50-60 miles a week. I passed cyclists on the MUP. I enjoyed saying "on your left" when I did.

When it means 'racing' your 9 year old granddaughter, you'll gladly feign a mis-shift or something just to let her win at least once. ;)

Nope.. You're the only one :p
Seriously, I've been passed at one time or another by just about everything. I've found some of the oldster Freds can be surprising. To my credit, I have yet to be passed by anything on training wheels or handlegrip tassles, but that time may be coming.... |
When I got dropped by an older woman riding an English 3 speed with a horribly squeaky chain, I immediately scrapped my current bike and got a newer and faster version, and flat dropped her like a hot potato the next time we met.

I got passed by a cyclist going uphill last week. I was giving it all I had, and the guy just cruised by like it was nothing.
Some people are fast! I don't get it. |

Some rollerbladers can go very, very fast. I had trouble catching up to one once, and I was probably doing about 17+ mph.

I've passed bicycles whilst running, even on flat ground. But it was a family group. Those little kids were slow.
I'm sure I can run up hills as fast as I can bike up them, especially with all my heavy commuting junk. I don't even like to carry water when I run. And it sounds like the woman was doing hill intervals. The last time I did those, training for the Hood to Coast, I pulled a calf muscle on about the 7th rep. I don't usually run fast any more. |

A few months ago I passed a runner, only to have him catch up to me when I hit the steep part of the hill about 500 feet away. That spurred me to go a bit faster and I passed him again for good.
Last year when I first started riding, a rollerblader passed me. I have no idea how slow I was going because I didn't have a computer then, but it was very humbling. |
I got passed by a turtle last week. Going downhill.

I had to walk my fixed gear up a steep hill once and while doing so passed a cyclist riding up it. He made a woeful comment.
