audiobike

i was wondering if anyone else likes to listen to books on tape when they ride. i got about an hour each way, and sometimes listen while i'm at work when i got a lot of repetitive mindless tasks to do (i work in a lab). i'm just about through most of the good stuff in my library's collection and so was wondering if anyone knew of other good (free) sources or had any recommendations. i looked online and apparently it costs 15-20$ to rent audiobooks, and the local library won't get audiobooks through inter-library loans.

i'd rather not have a discussion about the safety or legality of listening to something while riding. just curious mostly to see if anyone else out there does it or not and what their thoughts and suggestions are.

also was curious if anyone has a radio/speakers on their bike and how that works out for you.

any of your basic illegal mp3 filesharing progams will have people sharing books on tape. you might have to learn the in's and out's as they are not nearly as popular as the new n'sync single but they are out there. i have/had quite a few on an old computer that died on me! still waiting for another case to put the hardrive into.

so cheap it's free.....

I use a cheap radio, that has it's own speaker, and use earbuds when on the lite rail. If it plays out loud, it is legal, and I can still hear background (traffic) noise.

I used to see this guy riding around town on a recumbent with a small stereo mounted behind his seat. He was always playing classical music with a smile on his face. Seemed like a happy guy and made me feel pretty good too.

What is it you're going to do when you "hear" a car...get off the road?

I have one of these:

It's stereo. Cars will drown it out. And it sounds half way decent.

eBay or half.com can have some really good deals every now and then

Was it worth the price? How was the installation process? Thanks.

Man, books on tape would sound totally sweet on a Soul Cycle!

Yep, I'd say it was totally worth it. It's on my road bike with drop bars, and last time the bike was in the shop, my mechanic was nice enough to offer to re-wrap my bar and put the wires inside! So now it's totally sweet. Since I like to have water bottles where water bottles generally go, I got one of those bento boxes (large size) to go on my top tube and my amplifier and my mp3 player fit into that nicely.

(Note that the system is really just an amp, some wires and two weather-resistant speakers that fit into special end-caps.)

My only caveat is that it's a bit of a battery sucker, so rechargeable AA's would be a good thing to invest in, and despite the fact that it has a slide-off battery compartment, I have to unscrew the whole back of the amp to get the battery holder out for changing batteries. They have some sort of re-charging thing, but I didn't bother to buy it.

But, all things considered, I like having stereo speakers to jam to on my rides!
