I now live in San Jose, where they dont have winter, but I moved here from Maine where I commuted year round, and I would ride in what anybody would refer to as cold weather. For really cold weather, I used a pair of gloves that I got from Cabelas, which were marketed to snowmobilers - they have a waterproof leather shell, and fur lining. Many people wore lobster mittens in the winter, but I never liked the feel of those.

For myself, in Boston, the biggest problem is keeping my gloves dry from sweat. My coldest rides for my hands are riding home when my ski gloves haven't dried out yet. I can't dry ski gloves at work and occasionally take a second pair in to have dry gloves on the way home. At home, I just sit them on the radiator where they dry quite quickly.
I think that the perfect gloves for most winter riding for me would be a wool liner (or two pairs) with a leather overglove - I still haven't found quite what I'm looking for. Below 10f, I do carry a pair of mittens in my panniers, just in case. |
