This will be my third winter commuting.
Now that I have all the cold weather gear I need, I find replacing some as it wears out. I look forward to it. Well, mostly, I'm looking forward to commuting in the fall and spring weather. But the winters of North Carolina don't cause me any more grief on my bike than they would in a car. |
Looking forward to. Not as many people on the pathways, and an excuse to buy more winter-related gadgets for the winter bike!
I find I'm actually warmer if I ride my bike to work: it's the standing and waiting for a bus or train that really sets in the chill. |
Reading about winter in other places always makes me appreciate the PNW.

I'm looking forward to it...Which is odd for me, since I absolutely despise the cold. Even on the NC coast, we get bitterly cold mornings.
But I have a shiny new long-sleeved thermal jersey and pair of Specialized RBX thermal bibs bought on sale (50%!) at the local bicycle shop of choice (bicycle-gallery.com if you're ever in the Jacksonville area) that's making me want to enjoy the cold a bit more. Also, I have a new-found want to return to bicycle commuting nearly full-time. |

Last winter was unusually warm, which is unlikely to repeat itself this year. I have a few pieces of new clothing that I never did get a chance to try last year due to the lack of properly artic temperatures.
I can deal with the winter and it can be a bit of fun, but I don't look forward to it. I can get all my commutes in, but I end up doing very little recreational riding. |
For me, I'm not looking forward to it but I'm not going to let it get me down either. Snow in SW Wisconsin not much of a problem. It snows, the plows and salt trucks come through, and bam! The roads and streets are clean. Maybe lose a day of commuting when it snows. Gives me a chance to see if my car will start.
I do have a lower limit for the cold though. If its going to be much below 10F I'm probably going to drive. I have a 12 mile commute which takes me about 45-50 mins and that is about my limit in the cold. I have all the winter gear that you can imagine, full smart wool base layer head to toe, multiple sets of gloves, and other head wear, decent riding pants, lots of mid layers, a great vented outer shell, and a killer pair of winter shoes (shimano MW81's for anyone interested). I find that with the correct gear, I can enjoy myself. I tried it without the proper gear and its no fun at all! |
I'm going to keep an eye on the temps this winter in New York, where they expect a severe one. Or, at least that's what the oil company commercials say!
I'd like to commute straight through, but with ice on the roads and young drivers skidding everywhere, I dunno if it's a good idea. |

Interesting thing I've found is that the "balance of fear" tips in our favor in bad conditions. Suddenly, motorists become afraid of hitting cyclists. I get huge room in winter. Plus, they seem to think the crazy will rub off somehow.

After building up a bike specifically for winter commuting, I am looking for to it. Roller brake on the front, 3 speed IGH with a drum brake in the back, and then some knobbier tires once the snow flies and my bike will be totally ready. Hopefully, I will be too.

I hate the winters here in Pugetropolis but I built up a dedicated rain bike for this year so I'm gonna try to ride as much as I can get psyched up for. got all the raingear I need still need to figure out the footwear but since I'm gonna be riding platform pedal I think my goretex light hikers should be good with wool socks.

It's just different weather, and another series of days. I bought a new pair of fall gloves, that's about all the thought I've put into it. My studded tires were new last season so I don't have to worry about them for a few years.
I do like when it's dark longer, I like riding in the dark. |

This will be my first winter commuting on bicycle and I am a bit nervous. I hope to be able to ride every day but we'll see! I'm mostly afraid of it being too cold.
Any veterans of winter commutes care to dispense some advice? |
I hate winter and everything associated with it. It'll be worse this year as I haven't biked to work in two years, and I've moved twice in the meantime, so I can't find any of my winter stuff. Gonna be expensive...

Here in Florida it has dropped from 95F with 90% humidity to the mid 80's. I can't wait for winter. Winter means highs in the 60's most days. I suffer through the summers to get to the winters. On unusually cold winter mornings I do have to put on full fingered gloves and something to cover my nose and ears but most of the time it's the same as I would dress in the summer.
|
We didnt have a snowy winter last year which was good for me. Yes, cold, rain and wind but no snow which played to my advantages. I was able to get used to commuting the winter time and low temperatures. I know I need to make some modifications like studded tires and a few other things but I am headed in the right direction.
The summer here is killer and so darn humid that riding home is not a lot of fun. Morning rides in the summer rock but afterwork it can suck plus a warm water bottle is OK but not great. In the winter, I just need to take a little more time to think what to wear and how to layer. Some people thing I am nuts for riding in the winter but I dont care PLUS THE WINTER KEEPS MY WATER BOTTLE COLD!!!!!!!!!! :) |

I absolutely HATE the cold and winter ...I hate waking up from a warm cozy bed to get all geared up to ride in the cold and sometimes wet. No thanks.

Actually that's one of my favorite parts of winter riding. Knowing that there's warmth on either end of the journey is more motivation for me while out on the road.

Not really sure how I feel about the change from summer to fall and then into winter. Living in Maryland some winter days can be a bit cold. Just picked up a new set of winter gloves so I'm ready just not sure about the excitement level at this point. Hard to think about it when we still have nice sunny fall days.
