I like to ride blindfolded in traffic. Relying only on my sense of hearing allows me to be hyperaware of traffic sounds. This way I am much more aware of cars than when I am overcome by all the competing visual stimuli.I always feel I ride faster after I apply the blindfold.

Well the streets are empty, here, at 11, but I'm just not any faster, either way..

A bit dangerous these days as if you're in an accident involving no fault on your part, you could still be found to be contributorily negligent due to the alcohol consumption.

There's a big difference between being drunk and having a beer or two. I've done some great rides after a couple of beers, or even better, stopping for a brew during a ride. Not often, but it is always tempting. Usually I just feel loose.

Whatz with the concern about speed while commuting? Commuting speed never registered on my bike fun meter.
Bicycling, including commuting from work, is even more enjoyable while drinking beer. The beer tastes better, too.

Don't know about commuting, but the fastest lap of my evening ride occurred after a couple of beers. Masked the suffering, I suppose.

I know it isn't legal to ride intoxicated, but when I was back in college, I left parties late at night on my bike a number of times. Figured cops looking for drunks were more likely to be stopping cars rather than bicycles and I was less likely to hurt someone on a bike. Never got stopped and checked on my bike; can't say the same for my car.

Some of the fighters I train/corner swear by a beer or two before they step in the ring/cage. Idk if it is psychosomatic or not. I never did when I fought. They swear it gives them an extra boost of energy. Me? I drink them for their health benefits!

Sure, I can have fun without drinking.

But, as a responsible adult, I can elect to drink as well. The people who totally abstain from drinking worry me the most because they sounds as if they lack impulse control.

It wasn't a moral jab at all. Simply a fact that I do not require alcohol to have fun. Riding my bike is fun enough and in the event there is an incident I can tell the insurance that no alcohol was involved and it makes it easier. Not that I plan on an accident happening of course but I would prefer not to be a statistic in that regard. I can and do drink on a very rare occasion and I notice no difference in the amount of fun I have. I have never understood the need to consume alcohol to feel like you are having fun.

No one I know needs to "have a beer" to have fun. I feel sorry if you know people like that

I drink beer because it taste good and I love it. The drunkeness is just a fantastic side effect. Have I rode drunk? Yes. I can also have fun sober. I manage to do it every Sunday thru Thursday.

But all this is off topic really I think.

I was more pointing out that riding after drinking is dangerous and I would not condone it. I have fun riding my bike and don't feel alcohol should play a part regardless.

Disagree: I think I'm usually a bit slower after a stop at the pub. It takes a bit of the strength out of my legs, and a bit of the motivation out of my head. It's not a bad thing.

Riding after a few beer is not.

I guess if you don't drink you wouldn't know the difference.

But riding after a few can still leave you in a legally tenuous situation wrt liability even if you don't meet the level for legal intoxication. If you're in an accident and you've had even one beer, don't ever volunteer that information.
