Best red light for back of the helmet.
 

I'm sure many of you have found a good way to make this work. I already have two VERY bright tail lights, but I'm thinking something higher, more eye-level to drivers would help with rear visibility at night. Kind of like the 3rd brake light on cars.

What kind of red light works well for mounting to the back of your helmet. Not looking for super bright. Needs to be fairly light and able to be easily and securely mounted. Not looking for having to do a lot of fancy fabrication.

I love my Blackburn Flea 2.0 rear light. Bright. Multiple blink modes. Battery charge indicator. USB recharging. There even a solar charging option. Tons of mounting options, since there's no proprietary bracket. Much more secure than your average clip mounted blinky.

I use a planet-bike tail light. Holds pretty securely. Although now that I see they have one designed specifically for this application, I might switch to one of those.

Those of you using velcro and/or zip ties, do they seem to hold the light securely? I dont want the light bouncing around, rattling, etc...

Busch &Muller makes a 4 LED battery light for helmets..
each LED is on a separate wire, so one can go in each
rear hole for ventilation in the helmet.

I expect a battery will certainly get you thru the winter..
which in the South is Shorter.. 6 months up here, it's wet..

Rain covers over and Helmet lights just don't work together.

According to the write up on BikeRadar, it should last 100 hours before needing to replace the battery. Found one cheesy vid on youtube that 'features' the Topfire.

In the same vein, there is also the Fire Eye from Illuminated Cycling. Here is a youtube video review posted by commutebybike.com that compares it to a Lazer helmet and a PBSF.

Most plastic clips on blinkys are pretty crappy, IMHO. The Blackburn Flea uses a metal clip that is much tighter than your average blinky.

I don't usually go for Blackburn stuff, but the Fleas are really well made.

I use a Planet Bike Blinky 7 held onto the back of my helmet with zip ties. This isn't nearly as bright as some of the 0.5+ watt LEDs, but it does have LEDs that point sideways and off at an angle. It is actually brighter from the side than my PB superflash, which I think might be an advantage for a helmet light. I also have the PB superflash on my seatpost and reflective material on myself and the bike.

The RedZone 4 is in a class by itself as a helmet light because of its omnidirectional flash. Unfortunately, it's also in a class of its own in terms of cost ($100).

You can find great info on the RedZone 4 by searching the Electronics, Lighting, & Gadsets subsection of this forum. (And the candlepowered forums too.)

mechBgon has the RZ4 and has posted a couple of vids on youtube about it. Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock through the manufacturers online store. Probably more powerful than what the OP is looking for...
