Ack! Wind!
Around this time of year, the wind starts. I am always surprised. At first I think I am just weak, tired. Then I realize how hard the wind is blowing in my face. Stubbornly I press on, in my normal gear, struggling and slowing, a dying fly trapped in hardening amber. Survival takes over from pride. Change up, way up the cluster. Get down in the drops, elbows bent, mash mash. Look at that guy, he's all crouched and pretending to be a racer, and not even going 15 mph ha ha ha poseur. Said from inside a car, windows shut, immune to the wind. It is good for you, I lecture myself, work harder, you could use the exercise, too bad you're so fat and non-aero. F-- OFF, I whimper back, too out of breath to say more. Fall is here.
P.S. Checked weather. Today was east wind (yup, right in my face) at 22 mph, gusting to 33 mph. Whimper, indeed. |
I dealt with it today, too. It's not too common for it to affect me due to the hills and woods where I usually ride, but today I rode home from Salem so I went through a lot of farm land. So I used the drops on my woodchipper bars. Hey, they work OK. Mostly I just dropped a gear or two. At least it kept me from drowning in sweat. So did the perfect 73 or so degree temp though. It really was a nice day. I wish I hadn't had to work late, so that I could have missed more of the traffic, but even that was OK.

Could not agree more, very windy with those east winds blowing down the gourge.
Hope the winds die down by Monday, planning on a long ride ~50 miles, to and around Sauvie island. |
gettin breezy here a bit too. Luckily most of our fall wind come from the north and in the afternoon makes a great ride home especially since its still really nice here but down in the mid to high 30's the last two or three mornings.

Went to Sauvies Island today, rode 20 miles, felt like 48 miles. Gusts nearly blew me off the road. Stupid wind, why can't it be smart like us!?

You have to admit it sure is nice when the wind does travel in your direction, which only seems to happen once in a blue moon.

Yeah, I've not been liking the upright riding position of my hybrid the past few weeks. The way home is a pretty constant 10-15mph headwind.
|
My short ride consist of a square perimeter and on windy days my bike gets wind from 1. left side 2. right side 3. front 4. back. I usually do it twice on windy days and my only motivation to really push for a speedy ride is to get to #4 lol.
