Winter Shoes
 

What shoe setup do you guys use in the winter? For the last few years I've been wearing heavy work boots, but now my commute has changed from about 15 minutes one way to about 1 hour one way, so I'm looking into some winter cycling shoes.

On my road bike I go with the wool socks/regular road shoes/booties combo, but I'm interested in something that's a little easier to walk in. For those of you who have winter shoes, are they much warmer than regular shoes plus booties? Do you have a shoe you would recommend?

If you are looking to use clipless you can check out the Shimano winter shoes, they are reasonably priced and work well unless it is extremely cold. I have ridden in 10-15 deg weather and with wool socks my feet were a little chilly but ok.

How cold does it get in Reno?

These GoreTex boots with heavy rubber overshoes and two pairs of socks were good for keeping warm while commuting 12 miles each way at -4° F.

They also were suitable for walking in the snow when getting to and from the bicycle at home and work, and for dealing with the snow and slush on the road during winter months.

Definitely NOT for those more interested in speed and "efficiency," than keeping feet warm while cycling in cold weather.

I have some LL Bean Boots, out here, the insulation is less important,
but they are also offered in an insulated version too..

rubber bottom, leather upper..

bikes have platform pedals some with grip pins, Ergon uses grip tread patches of abrasive..
like Skate deck stuff..

get gator neoprene socks to wear. Your feet will sweat but they will be them nice and toasty!

I wear good thermal socks and a pair of insulated hiking boots. Not the most comfortable but its kept me riding in the low 20's.

I wear Sidi's boot and have no problems w/wet or cold feet. Expensive, but well worth it (and they come in big sizes).

Did you get toe spikes?

mountain bike soles tend to come with the nut in the sole toe.
same thread will take 5mm threaded track spikes, FWIW.

Nope.

It's not super cold here, but it does get down to the low 20s overnight. As luck would have it, my work schedule usually puts me out on the road when the temps are at or near their coldest. I know a lot of you deal with worse, but I've never handled cold weather very well. Comfortable for me usually seems like overdressed to most.

I was looking at Shimano shoes. My road shoes are Shimanos, so I was hoping the sizing would be consistent if I need to order online. Anybody else have experience with them?

If you're using winter hiking boots, which ones are you using? The boots I've been using for the last few years are way too heavy to be comfortable for the longer commute.

The winter boots shown in msg #3 were made for DOD (I think) possible brand name is Best Defense™. Yes they are heavy, and ARE comfortable and warm. Weight has nothing to do with foot comfort on a short or long bike commute. It does require more effort, than lighter weight shoes, but the warm toes is all about comfort.

When it is dry cold weather I wear a pair of Raichle GoreTex half boots. Warm and comfortable.
