New cycle, sold my 7200fx that was very good to me over the 7 years since I bought it. I go over too many curbs/stairs to have one of the new FX models and really like the hydraulic disc brakes and remote suspension lockout.

Anyone have thoughts on this bike for commuting? It may be a bit heavy but I am hoping the offroad capabilities make up for it by creating shortcuts I couldn't take on my FX.

That is a sweet bike, and is pretty damn close to the perfect commuter. Basically a nice MTB with road tires - you will drive the snot out of it with a smile on your face.

Just make sure to store it securely. Components like that will "get feet" very quickly.

I ride something similar (an MTB with hydraulics and a lock-out front suspension).

I made sure to get something with the threaded mounting holes for the front/rear rack and fenders are well. It makes a great commuter.

The biggest advantage that I see for an MTB over a "road" bike is that it's much easier to ride with a front/rear child seat on a MTB than on a "road" bike. I think trailers are pretty lame to ride with in an urban area so I went with the MTB instead and I haven't regretted my decision at all.

It looks like a great bike for commuting. Take good care of it and it'll last a long time.

I've been riding an 8.5 DS since May. I have about 2800 miles on it now and my only complaint would be some broken spokes. I use it to commute 30 miles round trip give or take depending on the route I choose, and wanted the heavier duty because of curbs and pot holes and the like. One thing I did do was pull the knobbies for a set of touring tires.

Dual Sports are nice .. suspension fork is OK , but not essential,
but they come with one , so you use it..

for Practicality, Mudguards, Rear rack, next ?

AWESOME. Much smoother than an 8.4 and still as quick as my old hybrid w/o suspension

i would have saved $200 and bought an 8.5 but they didn't have any my size and didn't want to wait a few weeks
