Final 2012 commuting stats
I made a thread like this last year to summarize my commuting profile. So far this year I am at:
bike 146 days public transit 34 days car 5 days cab 0.5 days If you're wondering about the missing half day, I went straight from work to the airport one day, and I don't cound that in these stats, which are about commuting between home and work. I'll post final stats at year end as I hope others will. |
so far:
-267 bike days -3 car days now that i have a dedicated winter commuter bike, anticipating a harsher winter this year, i'm hoping to improve. |
Interesting. I hadn't thought of keeping track of days spent commuting. I've been keeping track of my mileage and logging that in the thread on this forum. I think next year I'll add tallying how many days to my record keeping.
It's tempting to try to extrapolate how may days I've ridden from my commuting mileage totals, but my trips are split between three different routes into work, two different routes home from work, another two home from school and the route into school. Although all these are within a mile or two of each other, over some 1500 commuting miles for the year it introduces quite a bit of variation into the estimation! I'd like to think I ride every commute and only take the bus if I am sick or injured, or the winds are higher than 35 mph, but between mid-July and the end of October I hardly rode at all because I succumbed to getting an extra hour of sleep while I had a friends car borrowed. Makes me worry about ever getting a car again, it's so easy to be lazy! If only I lived somewhere without hills! |
brief synopsis (will update as necessary)
number of work days/year = 52 x 5 - 30 vacation days - 10 federal holidays - 30 days travel for work - 6 sick days = 184 max days number of days cycled = 41 days 11 weekend trips (leave Friday by car / return on Monday by car) = 22 days public transport = 184 - 41 - 22 = 118 % days by bicycle = 41/184 = 22% % days by bicycle excluding Fridays/Mondays for weekend travel = 41/162 = 25% :( will be better next year :D |
I too never really tracked how many days I commuted by car. Not even going to try to figure that out. I will for 2013 though. That is if we are still here after 12-21-2012 :D
To date I have 2217 miles on my CX bike, I rode 212 on my recumbent before I sold it, and I'm at 356 on my SSFG. Not all those miles are commuting though. There are a couple centuries and several training rides on there too. I used to work within cycling distance from home. Hopefully, I can find something close so I can continue. Even with it's down sides, I still love commuting to work on my bike. acidfast, I too used to spend a fair amount of time at ARN> FRA> AMS> but always glad to get back to ATL |

My last final is tomorrow, and I won't be riding so I'm done commuting for the year.
1637 miles (2635km), 85 total commute rides. Much less than last year even though I missed very few rides, mostly due to my class schedule last winter. At 7500km, I'm 400km short of last year's total. I should be able to close that gap by the end of the year. |
Dang, I dunno my stats because I never kept track. Here is for 2013!:thumb:
|
Around 120 days commuted by bike this year. I may do a few more this week before my holidays, but the weather is so gross now that I'm not sure...
My previous record was 37 days, and my goal for the year was to beat that. :-) |
I bike commute when I feel like it/car is not available to me.
Otherwise, my personal smugness depends on working in a bike shop, and subsidizing the general bicycling public by caring far more about service on their bikes than my income. Also providing free-of-charge bike tech/safety sessions out of the shop, for which I run a deficit of bike-commuting time because I sometimes unfairly value sleep over bike commuting. As a bike commuter, I suck, but it is in deference to bike commuter advocacy, so I don't often think of killing myself. |
191 working days sor far (196 max for 2012)
123 bike commuting days so far (started at the end of march only) 68 car commuting days total bike commuting milleage so far is 8500 Kms approx. (multiple computers on multiple bikes so not sure) total car commuting milleage so far is 4500 kms approx. I'm now equipped with a winter bike so I won't stop commuting during winter like I used to do. I'll still take the car when the elements are to ferocious but the numbers will definitely increase in 2013. Happy holydays to you all :) |
I don't keep track of the normal (i.e. by bike) but I do remember that I commuted by car or truck three times this year, basically because I needed on those particular days to have the vehicle with me. It felt quite odd.

4776.1 miles in 143 days of bike commuting in 2012. I was on track to hit 5000 miles but developed pneumonia and then thrush the first two weeks of December and haven't ridden since 11/30. I am looking forward to getting back on the bike in 2013. Happy Holidays!
|
Last bike commute of the year today. Total is 3085 miles in 151 days of bike commuting. See you all in the New Year!
|
Final commuting stats, jumping ahead two days:
4260 miles 221 days bike 13 days car (in mitigation, I had a broken collarbone for some of that) total CO2 emission reduced: 2.57 tons fuel & main cost savings (@ 50 cents/mile): $2,130 |
kinda sad compared to some of yall.
I wish I had ridden more but reading this forum has encouraged me to try it more next year.
427 mi = 2012 distance logged only 25 days ridden! 662 = lifetime lbs CO2 saved I had set the goal of at least 300 for 2012. I switched up bikes and was without a bike for commuting for a couple months during the summer. :notamused: I am excited about spring and shooting for more miles in 2013. :) |
I started bike racing, touring and commuting to school and jobs back in 1969. I've done it every year since. I used to keep track of all kinds of mileage- training, commuting, touring, transportation etc... I no longer keep track and I just call it "riding". I am on a bike pretty much every single day. But I miss once a while, I'll bet I missed 50 days of the year.
I probably average a minimum of 100 miles/week, sometimes quite a bit more but not often much less. Best guesstimate for the year: 5500+ |
FINAL COMMUTING STATS FOR 2012
Bike 161 days Public transit 42 days Car 5 days Cab 1/2 day (as mentioned, on that day I took a cab to work with my suitcase, then went on to the airport after work - I don't count that last trip as it is not a commute home. |
I took the bus or subway 42 days, but I paid an extra fare for the express bus 9 times. Thus I paid 93 fares for 42 days. At $2.60 per fare, my average daily bus cost was $5.76. Had I spent that on each of the the 161 days I biked, it would have totalled $926.90 in bus costs. So that is how much I can spend on bike-related costs every year and still ride as cheaply or cheaper than the next best alternative.
|
I hadn't thought to keep track of it. But I didn't drive to work once this year, or take the bus/light rail. Unless I was traveling, staying home, or on vacation, I rode to work every weekday.

2012 was an exceptional year, with "no winter" last Jan-Mar, and drought much of the year helping out considerably. Some numbers:
164 commutes, breaking the record of 121 for my current employment of ten years. 9191 miles (felt like quantity over quality as many days the ol' legs weren't "fresh") 10F the low, and 102F the high. 45 mph the highest wind gusts. 18 (of 20 work days) in November (of all months) was the best month. 15 commutes with my winter '95 'dale hybrid and studded tires and the rest on my '92 'dale touring bike. I doubt there'll ever be a repeat of 2012 for me, but who knows... :-) |
2012 was my best year yet for bike commuting and riding in general. Here are my commuting stats:
Bike commuting round trips - 170 Miles bike commuting - 5,172 I don't have a clue how many days I drove but I biked to work on average nearly 4 days/week. |
84 bicycle commutes (started at end of May 2012)
1004 commuting miles Fastest commute 12.84 mph 7/25/2012 Hottest commute 103F 7/5/2012 Coldest commute 21F 11/27/2012 3 flats (2 simultaneous rim tape flats one day on new bike due to bad rim tape, and one pinch flat) My goal for 2013 is 2,000 miles. I want to be the Adrian Peterson of 6 mile commutes in Springfield, IL. |
Good job guys - some impressive numbers so far.
For me, 2012 was a poor year for commuting miles compared to 2011. That's partly because I started working from home 2 days/week - on those days, I'd still go for a ride in the morning, but I didn't count those in my commuting stats, and I wasn't riding as far either. My overall miles were down compared to 2011 too, kinda pathetic considering my 2011 season was cut short mid-September by a broken wrist. 2012: 58 commutes, 1120 commute miles, 2933 total miles 2011: 81 commutes, 1523 commute miles, 3132 total miles |
2012:
131 Days 3,767 Miles |
