Who cares? Ride whatever bars you want.

JPprivate 11-27-12 02:47 PM

Handlebars are for wussies.

I think it is reasonably safe to say that where people use bikes for personal transportation in significant numbers, few will be found parking their bikes after a 10 mile commute.

So a lot of Americans live too far from work and therefore we use drop bars. /thread

I choose my bar/bike depending on distance. Most of my commutes and utility rides are under 5 miles so I use a bike with an upright position and North road style bars.

I like drop bars too. There's a reason you see them on touring bikes- multiple hand positions, making it easier on long rides. You don't have to crank them all the way down so you're bent double.

Anything beats flat bars IMO. North road bars are great for general riding around, and you can also grab the front curves or the middle section to beat the wind.

Double digit percentage in daily use, year round.

Why the year round qualifier? That's a tall order for people in cold climates. The people who commute in the winter tend to be the enthusiasts.

Anyway, outside of winter I'd say at least 10% of the staff in our office commute by bike on a regular basis. Probably 1/3 to 1/2 use bikes with drops. Of those that commute regularly in the winter (about 3 of us), 2 of us use bikes with drop bars.

Not statistically significant I suppose but it would seem to refute the idea that drop bars and commuting don't mix.

The OP wants to point out that because he sees more flat bar bikes that they are superior to drop bar bikes. Or something.

By that logic, Justin Bieber must be the greatest recording artist in history! ;)

I'm scratching my head looking for a point to this thread...

still can't figure out what's the point of this thread

"What you See, depends on Where You Look" ..

I think the OP just wanted to show us an entertaining video of those guys doing their acrobatic fight routine that happened to have some bikes in the foreground. I'm not sure why everyone's getting so agitated about this thread.

With Céline Dion, both canadian, is this something to be proud of?

Doncha mean a lot of Americans live too far from work, school and shopping to consider a bike a practical transportation mode, but a miniscule number do consider it practical, and of these, a considerable percentage consider road bike paraphernalia for their bike the best choice for commuting?

krobinson103 11-27-12 07:23 PM

I'm the opposite. My roadie got flar bars because drops do nothing but annoy me. I can ride all day pain free on a well setup flatbar with good grips.

Compared to the vocal stylings of fellow Canadian William Shatner, Dion and Beiber ain't that bad.

Entertainment....Just sit back grab a beer and enjoy reading the replys.

scroca 11-27-12 07:49 PM

I have flat bars on my winter bike to accommodate bar mitts.

I have bullhorn bars on my summer bike to accommodate longer rides (more hand positions).

And don't forget Neil Young, who is from Winnipeg, I believe.

And by the way, I am doing just that. Reused glass Paul Newman spaghetti sauce jar now filled with beer.

I promise I won't throw it under your tires.

megalowmatt 11-27-12 08:37 PM

In Soviet Russia, flat bars ride you.

marnepup 11-27-12 09:04 PM

*tsk* handlebars of any sort are for losers. Real men (and women) do without one of those...and a second wheel. Unicycle commuting for the win!

/edit/ there! now the thread has a point!

A nurse I work with rode the entire PCH bike route on a unicycle.

Interesting that so many claiming they want more cyclist and fewer motorist are so focused on what the right bicycle for all cyclist should be.

The best is still Leonard Cohen and he will be at the Montréal Bell center tonight. Can you guess where I'll be tonight? At the Montréal Bell center!!!! WOUHOU!!!!!!

So no commute for me today because no work for me today!!!
Nothing to do with this 'already no point' thread but I had to tell you, sorry.

Doohickie 11-28-12 08:05 AM

I like chocolate cake.

Jimbo47 11-28-12 08:26 AM

I ride my bike using a flatbar with bar ends, and I don't understand the problem?....I'm not racing anyone so how many more hand positions do I need?
