Thankfully, most of our street friend can barely spell "shimano". But yes, I agree.

Yeah, because police make that kind of effort. Those are probably still in a warehouse somewhere, unless Canada operates differently.

haha. Well, actually they did return about 450 bikes to owners. Decent I say.

Just to add to the discussion, I have heard reports in portland some bike thiefs do not cut the rack. They unbolt the rack, and load the whole thing onto pickup trucks, bikes and all.

Here in Phoenix the bikes that don't get reclaimed by the owners (I don't know what kind of effort is made) are sold at auction.

Much FEAR in Oak Town...I used to live there, and the dope fiends and gangstas instill much intimidation to all that questions their motives. For the most part - people turn the other cheek. In Oakland - Snitch = DEAD....plain and simple!

Security in depth: the two-lock method would force the thief down on their knees to make two cuts on the rack to get the bike, yielding only an unrideable bike with two locks on it.

Theft-proof? Nah, no such thing. But remember, you never have to outrun the bear, just your buddy.

I had friends who died there, if the gangs think you are a snitch and will speak to the cops, they will kill you and not even think twice about it, it's a war zone, it's not about snitching on a bike theft, it's about if they think you are a snitch, they've made the streets into basically the inside of a prison

It is called the bystander effect, everybody thinks someone else will call/do something, as a result, no one does anything.

When everyone is responsible, ultimately, no one is responsible.

Is anything more complicated needed than a wrench needed to unbolt this fixture from the ground? I wouldn't think it would take more than a minute or two, with no noise, no sparks, no mess.

(Face palm.) The patent concerns the design of the rack, not commonly known, industry standard, tamper-resistant ways to attach something to the ground. The patent and drawings also don't address how to lock a bicycle to the rack.

The patent rack is pretty slick, but probably no better than just simply filling the U-tube with concrete or rocks.

Hey, any word from the street on how New York City's beautiful new cast aluminum ring racks hold up to sledge hammers, car jacks, sawzalls and MAP/Pro+O2 torches?

I would say that the bike rack cut on the original post was done with a gas powered chop saw. Would have been through in a few seconds

if you made something out of aluminum here, they would steal the rack and leave the bikes, it takes a genius to make something out of a metal thats stolen day and night to sell for scrap. Why not just hang a sign on it that says steal me. They put in these nice aluminum street light poles here and the thieves simply unbolted the heavy cast aluminum access plates and stole every one. They also had aluminum covers for the inground garbage cans, until nearly every one was stolen and they had to go with fiberglass.
