Almost got hit yesterday

By a DEER!!! Less than a block from my house. I was still pedaling slowly, alternating between putting some weight on my knees, sitting back down, and just generally getting settled in. Saw a flash of brown, thought it was a big dog and then "uh-oh", he had the angle on me. Then holy hooves!!! I hit the brakes and she flashed just in front of me. Scared the bejesus out of me. I would hate to go down in a pile with a terrified deer. Don't know if my blinky light caused the reaction or of it was just a deer being a deer.

I was nearly nailed by a deer a couple of years ago. I was riding home from work on a pitch dark trail when I smelt a deep musky odour and just as I was wondering what the heck that was I heard a tremendous crash behind me. I whipped my head around and my helmet light illuminated a buck about 5 feet away. We scared the daylights out of each other. He went one way and I went the other right smartly.

I have heard of collisions with bikes, it doesn't usually work out that well for the cyclist. A deer once used my car as a springboard, so I've always been a little terrified that one might try to use my helmet the same way. Was riding last Sunday night and saw a buck with an impressive rack -- a couple of feet to the side of the road while I was descending at speed. I thought I was going to be impaled on one of the points, but fortunately he wasn't going anywhere.

My son-in-law had a similar encounter while riding his motor cycle on a freeway in town doing over 50 mph. How he escaped with only a broken ankle and some scrapes, I'll never know.

Carry a machete beneath the top tube. Practice drawing and swinging in one "swoop". When a deer comes close, off with his head!

In my dreams...I hate deer. One head-butted my front quarterpanel and caused $1500 in damage. Didn't slow him down a step. They're rats with hooves.

We just tend to get rabbits around here.

I do remember seeing the Antelope video. That's a sort of "You know your having a bad day when..." event.

I had a squirrel run across the street at me and dash right through, between my moving front and rear wheels.

I was on a solo, 100 mile ride in the Shennadoah Mountains returning to Front Royal in a blinding rain storm. Running downhill close to 40 mph. A large Doe started walking across the road, left to right. I started whistling and she stopped to look around. I had my brakes full on and never slowed. Passed her about a foot away from disaster.

At dusk at large buck leapt from the woods and across the county road only several feet from us. We stopped and looked at each speechless. Scary. It was big.

Glad you avoided the deer collision.
