NBA players put an enormous amount of strain on their body over the course of a year. I heard a source on the Heat team saying that Labron is using the 40 minute bike ride as a way to warm up without having to do the traditional running and jumping and running lines. They believe its very benificial and will significantly reduce wear and tear on his body over the season.

Finnish Väinö Myllyrinne (8'3") was an avid bike commuter with his custom made Crescent.
His giant bike is displayed Vapriikki museum.

Bill lives in San Diego where I ride. I see him all over town. He's instantly recognizable from quite a distance. Sometimes he comes into my LBS. He's a great advocate for cycling and a super nice guy.

LeBron actually owns a stake in the Cannondale bike company. As gratitude, Cannondale built him a highly-modified and reinforced Cannondale Bad Boy Ultra dubbed, "King James." Now, only if I can find the pic of it...

These guys would be great for drafting behind... With the Nets in Brooklyn now I wonder if any of those guys bike. My main commuting route takes me past Barclays Center. If they would only finally finish paving the streets around it that are still rough from all the construction...

I totally agree. There was a guy riding about my speed on a recent double century that was about 6'10" on a ~66cm frame. I could stay a foot off of his wheel and still be in the suck zone. The down side was that he couldn't draft anybody.

Great article. Simple, to the point. I've seen the topic of LeBron cycling brought up on other sites as well, but some of them were being silly. Such as "wow, you'll never believe it, he's riding a bicycle". The guy being a professional athlete and all.

Also, kudos to the writer for not mentioning helmets even once. :)

I think it's great "visibility" for cycling and commuting that someone like Lebron is doing it. Where I'm from, commuting by bike to work is seen as "low status" and only done by people who can't afford cars. Now if they see a billionaire like Lebron doing it instead of riding his hummers, that will go a long way towards changing perceptions.

Now imagine seeing the mayor commute by bicycle...

My respect for LeBron has gone up after seeing this. I'm just wondering if when a car gets anywhere close to him on his ride, he immediately falls over on his side and starts acting like he got fouled.

Jokes aside, I think this is a clue to how City Hall in any city looks at commuting by bike. If they're eating their own dog food or not, so to speak.

They were talking about James on SportsNation and 88% of people thought him commuting to the game was awesome. Some people were worried him getting hurt. I wonder how great of a city Miami is to commute by bicycle in.

IMO, I think that James commuting to work is a great thing. Ray Lewis is known for his cycling and said his riding 40 miles a day or so helped him train for this year. Having pro athletes be advocates for cycling shows that it's a viable option and isn't only for the fringe of society, myself included :thumb:

Well had he started to commute while still playing for the Cavs, pushing through the snow, he would have REALLY been in shape. ;)

He has done a kids bicycle giveaway in Akron for a long time, so he is no stranger to a bicycle.
