Sounds lovely.

Unfortunately that would never happen in the U.S. because of the "independent, rugged individualist" myth. Everyone likes to think of themselves as self-made and not needing the government to help them. Taxes are a dirty word, and any expansion of government is derided as socialism.

I would be willing to pay more taxes AND obey more laws for cheaper health care.

On that topic, there is a proliferation of Freeride bike riding in western Canada. Freeride cycling is highly technical and often involves riding off of huge jumps and such in the mountains. The kids who partake in this hazardous sport are forever breaking themselves and needing serious medical attention. To the point - there are plenty of suitable places in the USA for freeride riders but the chance of a lawsuit for land owners AND no public health care tends to limits the growth of the sport in the USA to near zero. Parents here often limit their children's activities (except football of course) to somewhere less than certain maiming.

I wonder...does "free" public health care encourage people to take more risks because if they continue to get hurt really badly they know their insurance won't get cancelled and they will get patched up for "free". With freeride in Canada, no laws are broken yet the many are still paying for the needless risk and injury of a few.

My question to a protectionist society would be: Where to draw the line?

Absolutely. An injury is never considered serious and all employees also get unlimited sick leave (the insurance companies by law must reimburse the company for the lost wages) so most people don't consider the consequences of dangerous activities. By extension, the necessity of being married is very different. Most couples I know get married after having a child or two and only for ceremony (the necessity of having nuclear family for insurance purposes doesn't exist). Also, maternity leave, state-supported childcare, and the mandatory saving of the job for the mother to return to work, really force different workplace demographics.

It's a very difference place, especially with acceptance of extreme sports (like BASE jumping).

Check for firmware updates on the Contour site ... my Contour GPS came with .MOV recording but about a month ago they issued an update to change it to .MP4 and fix a few other issues.

town is on a peninsula, old part on the north side, town center, I'm on the south side,
rather than do the really hard climb over the top,, I go around.

Okay -- here's the first one I managed to get edited. Unfortunately the angle of the camera was pretty 'off' giving a low angle for much of the ride. I tried to take out the worst of the jumpy, distracting bits, but there are still a number of jarring scenes as most of it is at 4x normal speed.


And here's the second. Basically the same ride in the opposite direction, though some route changes necessitated by the reversal.

Thanks. Just did the update, but for my Contour model the .mp4 was not part of the deal. I did get an upgrade to vid quality according to Contour. Still generating .mov files though.

Not too bad a camera angle. Certainly watchable. I like your riding style for sure. Nice soundtrack too. Is that KMFDM? Didn't see a credit.

I especially liked the double-yellow line left turn then directly onto the next double yellow line in traffic (02:54). Perfect! Just how I would have handled that turn, although my approval is not something you would necessarily want to brag about here.

What is MM6?

VirtualDub is portable. Don't need to install anything, just copy and run. Same for the plug-ins. But if you want to use codecs like xvid, then you do have to install them. You can try and ask IT to install xvid for better playback of work related videos

haha.. yeah, that wasn't one of my finer 'safety' moments, but that particular intersection is kind of a mess under the best of circumstances. I know many here would disapprove. I often box that turn by using the crosswalks.

Man that DC commute looks nice. I would commute every day possible by bike if I lived there. I'm so sick of living in the suburbs and having to ride on rural, hilly roads.

What's your commute distance each way?

after watching some of the videos of cycling in new york city, i can't imagine why anyone would want to drive thru there. i would come unglued if i had to drive in that mess.

no kidding. I love my car and love driving, just not in traffic. I would never, EVER want to drive a car in NYC proper.

This ride is a too-short 4.5 miles each way. And I agree that urban riding is great compared to suburban street riding. The bad part of my commute is the 22 miles I drive to start and finish the bike ride (I take my son to school in DC before I head to work). My ride to work from home is 19-20 miles each way, depending on route choices. I hope to get an opportunity to ride (and record) that again some time soon.

Loved your video, look like you are on a trail or at least protected from traffic for the majority of it. Nice work - I miss Vancouver riding! Just moved away a couple of years ago.

Watch for doors! I don't think I would ever expect to get doored from the left while riding in a bike lane.

I had to wait for an overcast morning as my commute(s) point the camera directly into the sun 95% of the time. Also, I did not speed up the vid because as I watched other vids on this thread I was wishing I could slow down certain parts of them. I don't expect anyone to watch 45 minutes of video here. When I get the urge to add a few miles to my morning commute and/or run a few errands, this is the route I take. I almost always ride the fitness path loop through Audubon Park but cut that from this video due to file size and time.

00:00 - Ride starts near my home in a New Orleans neighborhood called Lakeview. Nearest landmark is Delgado Community College.
02:02 - Enter Mid-City.
02:45 - Bienville Ave.
05:00 - Carrollton Ave to Iberville Ave.
05:50 - Cortez to Banks St (07:03).
08:02 - Jefferson Davis bike path.
12:30 - Vendome to Walmsley.
15:22 - Fern Street.
17:30 - Carrollton Ave heading Uptown
21:15 - St. Charles Avenue.
23:50 - St. Charles at entrance to Audubon Park.
35:30 - Andrew Higgins to the Warehouse District.
36:47 - S. Diamond to Fulton Street.
39:30 - Convention Center Blvd entering the Central Business District.

nice ideas! thanks! I quite liked the position on the chain stay. It's stable and it's nice to see the crank system working.
On the fork though, it's really too shaky, maybe because the front wheel takes more impacts by the terrain...

Okay, for anyone who's still enjoying this thread: This is one of my longer commuting routes. I was still multi-mode, as I dropped my son off at metro, then parked nearby and rode from there, mostly to save some time in the evening (which will be a separate video).


I tried to keep this to a watchable length, but if any gluttons really want it, I think I can upload the whole hour and 10 minutes ;-)
