Has anyone found a source for common tamper resistant fasteners in stainless steel and metric sizes? In particular I'd like to find some pin-in-hex or pin-in-torx socket head screws. These suckers are tough to find in stainless and metric sizes. The usual places like McMaster Carr have failed me.

Thanks for googling. I saw this site too, but I was kind of hoping someone knows of a site that has prices posted, and an online shopping cart, and small quantities available.

Thanks, but of 157 matches, not a single one in metric sizes. It's kind of bizarro - I can find tamper resistant fasteners in metric or in stainless, but not both.

We have a winner! Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. Mutual Screw and Supply, suggested by dedhed is exactly the kind of site I've been hunting for.

Google search is great, but sometimes it really screws with me (no pun intended). The secret to finding Mutual Screw is to search for "metric pin in socket stainless"... comes up as second link. As soon as you add "hex" or "torx" to the search Google sends you off on a wild goose chase.

McMaster-Carr only sells stainless tamper resistant fasteners in inch sizes, but they'll happily sell you the tap to make them fit into your braze-ons, too...

They sell just about everything I need (and I probably average $10,000 a year with them at work) - it flummoxes me that they don't have metric stainless tamper-resistant stuff.

mthomas: Did you ever end up buying the fasteners from mutualscrew for use with the bondhus wrench set off Amazon? Looks like a box of 100 screws is in the $50.00 range so I'm hoping you can confirm that everything worked out for you before I go out and buy everything myself. Thanks!

I never did buy them. I was looking for small quantities... I only needed two screws and I just couldn't talk myself into spending $50 for a box of a hundred.

In the end I just drilled holes into the bottom of the hex socket of a couple of ordinary stainless screws and inserted a bit of heavy gauge stainless wire into the hole. The net result is pretty much the same as the tamper-proof hex screws referenced elsewhere in this thread and works fine with the Bondhus wrenches.

That's a good idea -- I need a few more than you did but I may have to try that rather than buying the full box.

I too only want a few but it doesn't seem like anyone sells them in small batches. I was thinking that I would buy the box and then try to sell off the ones I didn't use in small batches on ebay to recoup some of the cost. Hopefully there are other cyclists like us who want to purchase a small batch of them but don't want to lay out for the full box.

Either that or I'll just go the ball bearing + superglue route. Not field serviceable but it might be less hassle overall.

Try these folks: Bicycle Bolts, for small quantities of metric security Torx fasteners.

Note: Security Torx is not proprietary or controlled, and anyone can go to a good hardware store and buy a set of security Torx keys. If you park your bike with expensive components in the same high-theft location everyday, security Torx might not be the way to go. As a practical matter, though, if you park you bike with expensive components in the same high-theft location everyday, the thief will probably just take an angle grinder to your u-lock. The chance of a random bike thief just happening to have a set of security Torx keys is only sightly greater than the thief having a Dewar flask of liquid nitrogen and a stick of thermite.

I just want to say thanks for posting that link. No one has stolen my accessories in 18 months so I'll probably hold off under the assumption that it turns out I don't need them around here, but it's good to know that if circumstances change there's a shop around that will sell small batches of the fasteners.

OP - you'll be fine, with just Metric Torx. The tools to work with Torx are already cumbersome. I highly doubt anybody will scour the streets of Boston, with an assortment of Metric Torx drivers dangling from their belt.
