The last time I saw a sitting President was when I saw John F. Kennedy at Idlewild Airport (now JFK). He was riding in a convertible in full view. We all know how that turned out.

@zacster I was at Bergen and Flatbush.
I used to live down the block from the federal reserve and they used to shut down the block when Bush or Obama would come for a policy meeting.

Late post, but Friday was interesting. They tore out an older path through a park I ride and took out the roots that were lifting it. It was really nice until I met some fall leaves and early morning sprinklidge. All good, part of the deal...

I forgot to mention that yesterday, on the last leg of my ride home, about 100m (100yd) before I turned right onto Copper Street, another bike commuter coming towards me turned left onto Copper Street too. Just after you turn onto this end of Copper Street, there is a tiny hill, maybe 50m/yd in total but it is rather steep. By the time I turned onto Copper Street, I saw that the commuter in front of me, in a winter jacket, work pants, hat (no helmet) with a bag slung over his shoulder, had crested the hill and looked like he had done it with ease: I dropped a gear, stood up and pedalled hard to crest the hill and the other guy was well ahead of me. After catching my breath a few hundred meters/yds down the road, I started to increase my speed to try to catch this elusive commuter. It took me about 1.5km (1mi) but as I passed him, I then noticed that he was pedalling an e-bike and realized why it was so easy for him to take the hill and lazily ride along the street.
I've seen a couple folks in my area coasting improbably across an intersection or up a slight hill, only putting it all together when I see the large rectangular thing on the rear rack.

Warmed up a bit to 45F/7C, no wind at all...it was a perfectly still morning ride, not much traffic, and just plain dark!

Cool 36 degrees when I walked out the door. No wind to speak of, and 41 when I pulled up at my destination
Grabbed the wrong hat going out the door so my bald head was a little warm. Supposed to be 60 for the return trip.
Oovoo!!

It was pitch black and a little cold (27 F) this morning south of Boston, so I had a little breath fog on the eye-wear, but through the fog I was able to make out a furry figure just sitting in the middle of my lane, and it happened to be a nice big fox frozen by my headlight. I only had a few seconds to apply the brakes and start to go around it, but I got to about 3 feet from it before it scurried away, which was way too close for comfort. I've ridden by lots of deer very close to the edge of the road, but this was my first critter encounter which required me to apply brake and adjust my line.

My bike sounded kind of rattly this morning, which I was attributing to the steel thermos full of coffee in one of my cages. Then about 2/3 of the way to work, the noises started getting louder so I pulled over to check over my bike. Turns out that bolts were missing that are supposed to attach my front fender to the fork. I had swapped fenders over the weekend, and either forgot to bolt them on or forgot to tighten the bolts. Duh! In installed two sets of fenders over the weekend and apparently got a little lackadaisical.
Went to a bike parts swap meeting yesterday and got rid of a bunch of bike parts that were too bulky and not valuable enough to sell on eBay. Turned out great, and sold $42 worth of old saddles, racks and other miscellaneous parts. That motivated me to post some eBay ads for some nicer parts, so I should be well on the way to paying for my latest bike build by the time the week is up.

Somewhat cold this morning, -4C (25F) with a wind chill of -11C (12F). I left a bit late so I took a mid-length route of 18km (12mi) but that was just enough distance to cross the 4,000km mark for 2013. My fingers were cold for the first 20min segment into the headwind but after making almost a u-turn onto the highway, with less of a wind (not exactly a tailwind), I warmed up and ended up being sweaty by the time I got into work: even at these temps, it can be difficult to judge what to wear. My toes were a bit cool so I could have worn wool socks but, on the other hand, that might have been too much also.

Cold ride in this morning...thermometer said 29F when I left home. My chain is running a bit smoother now. Maybe it's getting used to the worn cassette.

Congratulation
Pouring rain this morning, 1°celcius, the legs and toes were cold when I got to work but the rest was fine. I got a good headwind on my way in.
I reassembled my winter bike this weekend so... bring it on!

Back to regular shorts and jersey weather here! I got an early start so it was lights on bright the whole way. Interestingly, almost all of the pedestrians are carrying lights now.

I couldn't find light gloves so I put on my snowboard gloves... looked ridiculous but felt perfectly comfortable. Those of you who live where there's actual weather can feel free to mock me. I deserve it.

I had my #1 bike in the shop last Friday for a couple of things, so I decided to have them put my studded tires on it, as well, as long as it was in there. I'm using the same Hakkapelliitta A10's as last year.
So this morning was my first ride on the studded A10's in over 6 months. They were slower, but not as bad on my #1 bike as on my #2 . Also, the fact that it was relatively warm for studded tires (32 deg F this a.m.) and light winds made for a nice, easy first ride on studs. I think easing into it this way is a good idea, rather than waiting until the first day it's nasty icy and fighting some horrible headwind on studs for the first ride of the season.
I'm thinking I might make a post in Winter Cycling on this thought, as well. Maybe a Lessons Learned as I Start Winter #2 post or something like that...

Today was my first ride in a while. It felt good to be on the bike and I am so thankful for my new headlight. It has plenty of light to see by and be seen. I hope I can ride again wednesday or thursday this week.

I had a very pleasant commute this morning. I left home late as I had to take the wife's car to the body shop first. I carried my bike on the car and rode from the body shop. It was a sunny morning and traffic was relatively light. I'm looking forward to the way home.

A cool ride this morning, had to stop half way to remove one layer though. I got the gloves part figured out, basically the same thing as last year. I tend to improve on things each year so the winter commute becomes better all the time. I just need to get some booties to cover my shoes so I can stay warm. I have been using merino wool socks and they fit ok in my shoes but still a little chilly after an hour or so. I am attempting to leave the clipless pedals on for the winter months but not sure how they will work with snow and ice on my shoes. I always had changed them out to platforms for the cold months but I will see.

I ran a hilly trail race yesterday, so I'm taking a few days off the bike until I think I can pedal up my hills without crying. Wednesday or maybe Thursday.
No, I don't win races.

Rode the beater today, locked it up outside which saves me at least 10 minutes over the safer, but much less convenient bike cage in the parking structure.

Cool and clear this morning, I got a flat about 6 miles from work. (first one is over 2000 miles).
I rode my first century on Saturday so I was expecting to be a little sore today, thankfully I wasn't.

Daughter gave me a ride to work this morning. Had a great ride home. It was about 60f and overcast. Took a longer route on back roads to stay off the highway. Nice peaceful ride with only the sounds of nature most of the way. I love commuting home as I can take my time and really enjoy the ride. I always feel in a rush to work.
