Humbling Commute Yesterday

I enjoy my ride in at my new distance of a bit over 7 miles one way. The weather has been great too.

Yesterday on the way in to work I met up with a guy who started commuting about three weeks ago and his commute was 35 miles one way - four days a week. He was on a front suspension mountain bike with full knobbies. He was "happy as a clam" too! He said that the commute changed his life and we exchanged many good stories before we had to part ways.

Made me smile :thumb:

Yeah I've found knobbies are really not much slower than road tires. The hum gets irritating though.

Well, at 70 miles per day, they won't be knobbies for long.

That's got to be at least 2.5 hrs each way. Very impressive from another commuter whose commute is also 7 miles each way.

Gotta agree, I ride knobbies and average 12mph in the city and roughly 15mph on the open road (no stops/starts). I can't wait for the tires to wear out so I can replace them.

He said he leaves at 3 AM to be at work by 5:30 most days. Yesterday was a 10 AM start and I saw him at 7:15 or so.

On my mt bikes, knobbies are WAY slower than slicks, YRMV.

A 70 mile r/t commute 4 days a week is kind of crazy. There are those that supposedly do it, but it is not something most people could maintain. I have done a similar mileage commute, but never more than once a week while mixing in public trans with my bike commuting the other days of the work week to limit my riding to 30 miles r/t each day.

Have you considered using a sharp knife to trim them down? ;)

Wow I thought my commute of 29 miles a day 5 days a week was tough. Jesus, this guy is... well, Jesus! :P

"happy as a clam," changed his life, leaves at 4am... something amiss at home?!

I can't stand knobby tires, but to each his own.
