The coldest so far for me was today, at 19 or 24 degrees, depending on whether you believe the National Weather Service or Weather.com (why would there be such a big discrepancy. Winter finally hit; we haven't had much of one until now. Tomorrow morning will be 15 degrees according to the NWS. We'll see how that goes.

I'm not too susceptible to cold; I think I generate a lot of heat. Down to the mid 30's, I just wear a windbreaker over my street clothes. Below that, I switch to a wool jacket. So far I've only worn a pair of light bike gloves (rated to 50 degrees). My fingers might be icy at the beginning, but once I get going, they warm up. My commute is only about 3 miles, so I can get away without worrying too much, but even so, by the time I've finished, I usually find I'm too hot rather than too cold.

My biggest problems are that my nose runs like a faucet, and my eyes tear up. The former I can deal with, but I'm not sure what to do about the latter. I wear glasses and ride it city traffic, so it can get a little tricky.

Yep. +1. Dry and cold beats wet and near freezing every time for me too. My -18C ride today was totally enjoyable.

In a cold and dry climate such as Edmonton (or London, ON?), do you have much wind? Our damp winter days are usually very windy. Our wind might be heavier than yours. Dan Burkhart, from Ontario, said he was impressed when he drove his 18-wheeler here. That's why we might sound like weather wimps, but 23°F (-5°C) with heavy wind and high humidity is torturous.

wilfried, I found that carpenter's goggles, available at the Home Despot for less than $10, keep the wind out of my eyes and prevent tearing. Then by accident, my new glasses are large enough to keep the wind out, so I just keep them on when I ride now.

Perfect riding weather today, -15 c and calm and since I was not riding far wore my walking clothes which would be too warm over any distance.

Will be volunteering tonight so will have to undress a little for a slightly longer ride.

Truly cold wind seems to dry/burn eyeballs in a really awersomely nasty way.
I noticed that. Get moving at 30kmh into -15c with any sort of wind and my eyes are in total pain. Googles seem to be the way to go, but wearing glasses I'm yet to find a set that don't fog. When I was into airsoft I had some with a built in fan and they still fogged like crazy.

Thanks for the tip. I was hoping to avoid yet another accessory. We'll see how I do the next couple of days in the teens with headwinds.

The performance of goggles with fan is mainly related to the size and power of the fan. The V-tech's fan from airsoft is pretty small no wonder it didn't work well

This morning when I left for work the windchill was -25C (-13F) actual temp was -15C (5F). When I left home I was wearing googles, but they fogged up so bad, I took them off and just rode without them, no problems with my eyes. I was also only wearing 2 light thin layers on my upper body, and one layer on my legs, a balaclava with a wool hat and a pair of lightweight gloves with mitts over it.

wolfchild 01-23-13 03:47 AM

It's colder today then it was yesterday. Windchill of -27C (-16 F ) actual temp is -19C (-2 F ). I think I'll add another lightweight layer. Love this cold weather riding.

I was getting ready to complain about how cold it had been the past week here in Holland. But now, I think I will just put shorts on and go enjoy the warm -7C (compared to your -27C)

DAMN THAT IS EFFIN COLD!!!!!

krobinson103 01-23-13 05:31 AM

Its been a balmy 1c for the lazt few days. Very refreshing. Probably get a few more cold soells before winter gives up though.

I live about 4hrs drive north of wolfchild and I haven't been biking this week because, since Saturday, the highest temperature (not including wind chill) has been -25C, this morning's walk in was at -35C with a wind chill of -45C and tomorrow is supposed to be the coldest day of this cold snap. However, I was passed by a cyclist: don't know how he did it, he was wearing "thin" cycling clothing, not bulky like ski/snowboarding clothes.

+1 on the safety glasses (though mine are from Ace hardware!) AND they fit over glasses. This morning for instance was 13F, 4 with windchill and my eyes were fine. I actually noticed a tiny gap of exposed skin between my safety glasses and balaclava - had to stop and move fabric down a big and all was well

spiker 01-23-13 09:12 AM

A mere Zero F. No wind, 3 mile commute, uneventful, routine. Most brutal was 13F but a constant 30+ mph wind with gusts that all but stopped me dead, as if I'd hit a wall.

wphamilton 01-23-13 09:17 AM

You guys talked me into it, and I purchased clear safety glasses from home depot this weekend for the night commutes this week. I'm not riding in the same kind of cold though, the worst it's been this winter is 27°F and I'm behind a windshield :D but even so it's been a great improvement.

dramiscram 01-23-13 09:31 AM

This morning. -32 celcius but I turned around after 4 kms because my wheels bearing started squeaking like hell, I think they need to be cleaned and lub with synthetic grease. I didn't want to risk a break down on my 27.2 kms commute at -32c so I turned around and took my wife's car.

London, ON is surrounded by Great Lakes, so the climate is much like yours. Humid -5C is more typical here too and I wish it were more like Edmonton sometimes. The ride I was referring to at the time featured a nice strong tailwind, but even the ride home into the same brisk wind in a dryer cold was OK. I cover every inch in cold wind and the right gear keeps the miserable away. I don't know how London compares to other places in terms of general windiness. I totally agree though, big wind and wet is my least favourite condition to ride in.

I have had good success with clear motocross goggles... no fans, but they are well ventilated and I think mine had some sort of anti-fog coating. I don't wear glasses, so I don't know if they would present a problem.

Are you talking about the sporty-like style or the goggle-style safety glasses?

Nope the gangnam style :ride:

I got the sporty ones*, fine for this weather. Personally, I'd get the goggles if I were really serious about it, and maybe rigging the top edge for a completely water tight seal (for rain).

*(the $3 "safety glasses", not the more expensive sporty sunglass looking ones)

tarwheel 01-23-13 12:44 PM

This morning was my coldest commute so far this winter, with an official low of 18 F. That is not as cold as my lowest temperature (15 F) but my commute is about 5 miles/20 minutes longer now than it was for my record temp. My water bottle was too frozen to drink from by the 8 mile point and frozen solid by the time I got to work.

I got these but at Ace Hardware - they fit over my regular glasses. My son says I look like a power ranger

jrickards 01-24-13 08:35 AM

It was -29C (-20F) with a -40C/F wind chill this morning, my coldest so far and likely, the coldest commute this winter.

I wore my ski goggles and they were fine. Yesterday, when I walked it, they fogged up quickly but likely because walking didn't push the moist exhaled air away from the googles quickly enough and allowed it go get into the inside.
