Did you get the Flu**********

So! Like me did you get a Flu shot, than come down with the Flu?
I thought I would get a shot this year, for the first time, since they
started giving them. Must not be my lucky year, about a month after
I got it, got the Flu, and a upper respirtry lung infection. Been about
5 weeks, and just starting to feel good again. Any one else have that
luck?

I've had the worst cough of my life over the last 10 days. Feel mostly OK during the day but I'm wiped out by 6:00 pm. Cough is worse at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Finally getting better. A co-worker has had it for 4 weeks.

It's led to more sporadic riding. I worked at home a couple days to try and shake it and avoid spreading it.

No flu shot for me and (thankfully, so far . . . ) no flu either. I was told that the flu shot venom (serum?) was suspended in egg whites, to which I am very allergic. Not sure if this is true . . . anyone here know?

Anyway, that's why I didn't get a shot, but so far haven't gotten the flu either.

VAMC, Flu shot was for last year's strain H1N1, instead of H3N2..

they found a insect Larvae that will make the shell of the virus,
to kickstart the immune-supression like killed virus
without the whole thing.. as a response .
said , as Proposed, to be useful for OvO intolerant patients.

I haven't had it yet, but my wife has. I'm going in to see my doctor about something else tomorrow and was going to ask about getting vaccinated. I don't know if it it's too late.

I'm ALL about getting flu shots, however, mishaps like this are somewhat disturbing:

Right now my mother is going through a terrible flu.

I had the big bad serious flu once about 15 years ago and I've been getting a flu shot every year since then (except that time there was a bad shortage)
.
I have never had a reaction from the shot, and I've never gotten really bad flu in a year I got the vaccine but I've had milder versions.

You may have read a European article... CDC got it right for our continent.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/...-2012-2013.htm

As of the first week in January 2013, most (91%) of the influenza viruses that have been analyzed at CDC are like the viruses included in the 2012-2013 influenza vaccine. The match between the vaccine virus and circulating viruses is one factor that impacts how well the vaccine works.

The 2012-2013 influenza vaccine is made to protect against the following three viruses:
  • an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like virus (from the B/Yamagata lineage of viruses).
Note: The H1N1 virus is the same as the H1N1 virus that was included in the 2011-2012 vaccine, but the influenza H3N2 and B vaccine viruses are different.
.

Here's a more objective report:
https://www.narcolepsy.org.uk/NewsEve...luvaccine.aspx

To put this in context that is LESS than .0001% of the people who had the vaccine.

Out of the 30 million that were given the vaccine, statistically at least 100,000 of them will have narcolepsy. As the syndrome is so under-diagnosed, 80% of the total will not have a diagnosis of narcolepsy. It could be that doctors who were looking for a reaction to the vaccine discovered patients with an existing condition. We don’t know and with the small number of cases confirmed so far it will be very difficult to prove one way or the other.

I am almost never sick. However, I have been sick for well over 5 weeks and haven't done any riding or exercising the entire time. Last week I finally went to the doctor and with the help of antibiotics I am just starting to feel better. It went from very bad chest cold (worst phlegm cough ever), to the vomiting flu and then back to chest and head. Its a nasty strain for sure.

I did not get the flu shot (I never do) as I am hardly ever sick. This one took me down.

I have gotten a flu shot the past few winters, including this one. However, I don't often get the flu -- maybe once every 10 years. I am generally pretty healthy and don't get many colds either. Some years I don't even get a cold, and I haven't had one so far this winter. ... knock on wood.

I got a lot of colds once my kids started school. Now that they're in 3d grade, I seem to have built up a bit of a resistance.

At ages 80 and 78 we got our flu shots.
Rudy got sick badly for 2 weeks and 2 more weeks of less severe symptons. Amazingly did not loose my appetite at all. Had diarrhea twice. Stomach soreness/pain was the main issue.
Kay fortunately did not get sick.
Think I can get a refund for my shot????
Pedal on!

I never get a flu shot, and I (almost) never get the flu. I did, however, get a cold that turned into an upper respiratory infection.

never had a flu shot, but i got the flu this year after not being sick for over 5 years (oddly enough, last time i was sick it was august, with a less intense flu)

was a brutal 2 days then just a lot of coughing and mucus and sweaty nights sleeps for about a week

those 2 days i was on the brink of hallucinations, no idea what my fever went up to

i blame this on my lack of cycling in the busy december months

One of the indications that it's the flu and not something else, is sudden onset of severe symptoms.

The time I had it really bad, I know exactly when I was infected... sitting on an airplane next to a young woman who was clearly in misery. Next day I went on my normal bike ride feeling OK, then I came home and spent the next few days with miserable symptoms (and promising myself I would always get a flu shot from then on). Wife got it just as I was starting to feel better. The flu really sucks.

No flu shot. Got a baaaaaad bug and its just now going away. About 5 weeks.
Tried to ride through it. Did for the most part, but was so weak I had to push the
bike up a 1/2 mile hill every day
I dont think Ive ever been hit so hard by the flu.

No shot for me, still no flu yet, although I had a cold. The flu shot is only good against some strains of the flu, and always a gamble. IIRC this year it was at about 50% effectiveness for what was going around, but then a nasty flu with a rare vomiting component showed up from Australia.

Last year when I got my flu shot my arm was so sore for 5 weeks I couldn't swim, mostly tried to push gurneys with just the other arm (injuring my back) and tried to ride my commute with only the lightest touch with that hand on the handlebar. Five weeks of that was hell, especially since I was in school that quarter and so commuting six to seven days a week and carrying a book bag around campus too. I decided to risk not getting the flu shot this year. Employee health of course tried to tell me that it must be something else, my shoulder that was fine the day before just happened to start hurting the day after my shot, even though it had never hurt before, I didn't do anything to hurt it and nothing else was injured. :/

I never really believed in the flu shot but since they were saying the flu was 4 times worse this year, i decided to get one and my insurance covered it 100% which was hard to believe. I figured it wouldn't hurt and think its working right now as have been feeling a slight amount of symptoms coming on but it slowly going away. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

My whole family (me, wife and two kids) got the flu shot and no one got the flu, although we all got really bad colds. At work, a colleague mentioned that her one daughter that did not get the flu shot (because of allergies to one of the ingredients) got the full-blown flu, while the rest of the family did not.
