My drive in to work is short and has no traffic. Once I get there, the parking is free, abundant, and close.
I commute because I love riding my bike. If something comes up that forces me to drive for several days in a row, I start feeling squirrely. |
I think it does, as long as it is a good commute. Commuting home makes me more happy. However, the most emotional I get out of it is when I'm in the car and I see other commuting by bike. I feel like that should be me and then I feel a bit guilty.

Commuting to work in the morning and commuting home at the end of the day make all the BS in between insignificant.

yes, bike commuting make me happy.
This winter has been miserable. It seems like everytime we've had a sunny day, I have been sick, and vice versa. Since I was not using it as much as I would like, I took the bike out of commision and have been cleaning and upgrading it. It has been good, very much needed, but man I cant wait to get out on the commute again. I used to commute along a similar route as my drive, because it was the shortest. But it was mainly along busy streets and only 6 miles, not really long enough to stretch the legs and too much interaction with barely conscious drivers. I then had an epiphany this November. There was no real reason to look at a bike commute like a car commute. i.e. no reason to try and minimize the travel time. I then decided to ride the long way into work. It is about 15 miles, and I actually have to hop on a bus to take me out of the way a bit, but then the commute is all on MUPs through open space parks. This has made such a huge difference, and has elevated my commute from a good time, to the by far the highlight of my day/week. I just wish we could get some decent weather so I dont have to truck around all this winter biking gear to and from work.. .cant wait for summer. EDIT: and this related quote was just shared by a facebook friend: "I always write my happy poems on sad days. On happy days, I ride my bicycle." -Andrea Gibson In my case, I suppose I would replace writing poems with working on the bike. |
Im liking commuting a little bit less these days. I recently moved from Madison, WI to Orlando, FL. Yes, winter commuting was a challenge - but summer commuting in high humidity on 90+ degree days can be miserable .... and the daily summer thunderstorms during 5 month rainy season here can make commuting dangerous .. and it happens almost everyday during the summer. High heat commuting IMO is much harder than very cold and snowy commuting. (Though .. perhaps the worse commuting is 33-40 degrees, raining and windy) ~Bill

yes.
my jobs sucks, but pays well. biking to/from clears my head and prepares / decompresses me. i get a good workout and 6-10mi (depending on route) is a waste of gas. also, i have a great nature trail that makes up about 1/3 of the route: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...20746879_n.jpg currently driving because the shoulders of the road on the last stretch (55mph county route) are gone due to snow and it's killing me. |
I commute to college.
I feel like a real man walking into my classes, shaking off snow like a dog, and making all of my engineer classmates feel silly for whining about the ten-minute wait for their mile-long bus ride. |
Rolling downhill makes me happy. Since I don't have enough money to hire a driver to haul me up hills so I can roll down the other side, I grind my way up hills so that I can earn the joy of rolling down.
My commute is generally uphill to work, and downhill home. Some days I just toodle along, some days I ride to compete against my stopwatch. I will long remember the day I set my current personal evening commute record. I can ride hard anytime, but sometimes you just catch the lights. Burning downhill towards a red light, from a distance you see the oncoming left-turn going through, then they stop coming through and I've still got maybe 50yd, so I KNOW the light is going green and my lane of cars will be going through (I consider cars moving in the same direction as "protection" from unattentive cross traffic), so I safely fly through the intersection at 30. Next light, same sequence, steeper part of the hill, 35. The happiness was so intense I almost cried, literally. |
It's kind of funny but many mornings I leave the house frustrated, angry, or anxious about something. I may fume about it all the way to work but by the time I get there I'm fine.
|
Bike commuting is normal for me. Car commuting makes me anxious, impatient, frustrated, and sad.

It's been getting worse because I'm currently rewatching all of DS9 on Netflix. |

Yes to all the above, especially the alone time. It's two hours a day just for me. Lastly, everyone at work thinks I'm either totally wacked or amazing - mostly the former. I love that

Commuting to work does not make me happy. Commuting from work to home does make me happy.

In fact, with the cold there is little left to enjoy in either direction. But I feel guilty if I don't ride. I'll be happier when my face isn't being blasted, red, and itchy from the cold/wet weather. |

I'm absolutely ecstatic today! It's been nearly 3 months since I've been on my bike. Lousy weather has kept me off it. It's not a valid excuse, but I just was not motivated to ride in the cold and rain. I looked at the forecast for today and it said 43 in the morning, cloudy, with a possible shower. That's good enough for me. I got everything ready last night for my morning bicycle commute. I have lost 25 lbs in the 3 months I have not been riding (diet and treadmill.) When I started riding today, I felt awesome! I was really moving out! I was fast! The weight loss made it feel like I just got a brand new light weight bike! So... yep, I'm happy! I look forward to losing at least another 25 lbs... and having the new bike feeling again! (although I won't notice this time because I'm not staying off the bike again for 3 month stretch.)

Simple question. Does commuting make you happy, and if so, why?
|
Biking to work makes my entire workday more pleasant. I feel much more positive and energized throughout the day. Also, I was amazed that my resting heart rate got down to 59!
|
I guess so...I mean driving is quite stressful and the bus is sometimes annoying. So cycling usually makes me happy, or at least avoids things that make me unhappy. Sometimes I will encounter a jerk driver that aggravates me tho. But then I guess that happens about as often as when I used to drive.
