Random handlebar questions
 

1) Trecking aka butterfly bars. These look very convenient in some ways. Are there any available which bend way out in front for an aerobar position, or with aerobar extensions and resting pads?

2) Extra stem & bar. When I dropped my stem I left a set of spacers worth of length on my steering tube. It just struck me, when I free that space up, I could probably add an extra stem and put a bar in there for mounting things. Has anyone tried this? How did it work for you?

Never tried that but it sounds like a good idea. Maybe make a light bar out of it to keep them off your handlebars if you use lights.

Yep, that's what I was imagining but with a narrower bar for gadgets, not to hold on to, and necessarily lower since I don't have that much stem left. Big question for me is how much does it get in the way if you normally ride on the hoods like I do.

It would probably rule out the trekking bar/aero bar idea unless you put a chin rest on it or a pad or something. So it's two independent questions for anyone who knows about the trekking bars.

Running 2 different ITM , trekking bars ,

got a 3rd quite adjustable and the semi rectangular C tube can take
widgets between the 2 clamps, joining it and the U shaped 1" upright that goes in the stem .. I could sell #3

I have a pair of stems stacked , on the steerer, raised the stem.. and gained space underneath..

the lower one carries the bar bag mount, 1" Tube.

SJS has a welded T to go on as if a 2nd stem , but only needs 1 bolt around the steer.
one style can slope downward to set the bag low, closer to the top of the wheel.

I did that for a while on my LHT. I mounted a stem and cut a spare drop bar to just the straight part of the tube, installed some bar plugs and then used it to mount my handlebar bag (Arkel med bag). I liked it quite a bit, but did find that by putting the extra weight even that much farther forward that I was unhappy with unwanted the steering inputs. I had the handlebars on top with the stubby bar below. If you like your bars lower you could put the stubby bar higher and use it for lights/computers etc, but from my perspective while riding I wouldn't have been able to see anything on that bar very well.

what you want is a German "trekking" bar. using "trekking" in google will produce more results.

not the best resource, but a good beginning for someone who doesn't type German. in this catalog there are sets of "trekking" bars ... one that goes forward and one the faces rear-ward. in addition, all kinds of spacers and extra bars are described.
