Which spd pedal for commuting
Hi,
I use spd-sl for my road bike, and have always just commuted on platforms. I think I'd like to get some spd pedals to use with my commuter (Jamis Sputnik single speed). What would folks recommend. I'm drawn to the ones with the platform side too, as I'm not sure I'll always have the shoes with me, but am open to others. Any advice?
Thanks, Bryan

I have a pair of these on my utility bike. Nice wide platform on the second side, with grippy pins.

+1 to the M324's. The clipless side works great (obviously), but I went through a phase where I was then scared to be clipped in (this was when I was getting back into cycling), and the "platform" side worked well with sneakers.

As far as I can tell, all dual format pedals are spd, not spd-sl, so unless you want to change your road bike pedals, you will need 2 pair of shoes.

I like these pedals for commuting the best, Shimano A530's.
I also run these on my commuter mtn bike/trailer rig, Shimano M324's.

Winwood Decksters and a spare SPuD cleat will give your double sided pedals, that are not Shimano,
a Platform side you can remove when you need thje double sided function, again.\
but the big surrounding frame , like CB Mallet and s similar from Time,
also lets you use the soft soled running shoes ,
just the sponge in the midsole absorbs what cleat may stick up.
I have a Pedal Wrench, I just change pedals.

On my ride today my feet slipped off my pedals like 3 times. Thinking about some new pedals myself. Don't know what to look for

I like Crank Brothers pedals. I've got some sort of Crank Brothers on all of my bikes. In the beginning this was so I could use one pair of shoes with all of them. Now I've got five pairs of shoes with CB cleats.
The plus side is that they're easy to clip in and out of and have a lot of float. They also shed mud really well, but that shouldn't matter for commuting. The downside, as someone on BF said recently, is that the cleats are made of butter. I don't know if SPD cleats are typically better, but I do go through a CB cleat in about six months.

I have one of the Shimano spd/platform versions and they're great. I liked them much better after I got multi-release cleats though as I can unclip fast in almost any situation.

I don't know about the soft cleats. I have between 5-10k miles on one set, and they are still going.
I used SPD for a few years and eventually switched everything to Crank Brothers pedals.
I use Candy pedals for my commuter and my SS. They work great with commuter style cycling shoes.

I have been known to rotate worn cleats to shoes I use less often, but because I wear those shoes less often I don't really have a feel for how long they last.

If you are used to clipping in I recommend skipping the brick-like dual-sided training pedals. I really like the xt m780s that have the new larger contact area that debuted in XTR. You can buy them new for $60 on ebay. Spd cleats wear very well -- about 1-1.5 seasons for me.

I like these pedals as well, just haven't seen them or used them myself. I am always looking for pedals that work with SPD and/or Vibram Five Fingers. These look like they are just the ticket, along with the A530's. I will try these on the back roads touring and gravel road bike next.

The A530s seem to work fine with street shoes too, although I haven't tried them in wet weather.
