Do you eat before your ride in?

On one hand, I'm tired of feeling weak on my ride in. On the other hand, I value my sleep dearly.

I'm thinking of breaking down and getting up ten minutes earlier* to shovel something in my face in the mornings.

*What this really means is that I'll probably get up at the same time and just get to work ten minutes later.

Buzzatronic 03-07-13 03:32 PM

I do. Usually a breakfast sandwich from the micro along with a V8 Fusion and a Banana. My commute is just under 9mi each way.

Tober1 03-07-13 03:33 PM

I always eat before I ride in to work. Pretty much directly before actually. I'm only about 8 miles though which does make a difference. And if I take the hills hard I can usually taste what I've eaten.

timvan_78 03-07-13 03:34 PM

I don't. (10.5mi each way.)

Fishmonger 03-07-13 03:36 PM

I rarely eat, just because I usually can't eat anything for at least an hour after I wake up. But I sometimes do feel weak, even after 8 miles. I just keep some stuff in my desk for when I get there (protein powder, peanut butter, juice, etc.) I wish I could eat beforehand, but it usually makes me feel sick.

tarwheel 03-07-13 03:37 PM

I always eat before my morning commute. My commute is about 15 miles/ 1 hour of riding, and I would be exhausted trying to ride that far on an empty stomach. I'm also very hungry when I get up, so it's worth getting up early enough to eat for me.

CACycling 03-07-13 03:46 PM

Toast with peanut butter and a couple of glasses of water. I find the hydration to be at least as important as the nutrition.

E.S. 03-07-13 03:54 PM

I don't, partly because my commuting starts pretty early at 5:30. The ride is 13mi each way. I like to arrive early at work and then eat, that way I'm not hungry again until lunch.

shepherdsflock 03-07-13 04:03 PM

I used to eat my breakfast at work, but I got tired of carrying extra food with me. My lunch box isn't very big and really only holds enough for my lunch. So I started eating at home before I ride. It took some getting used to. Having food in my stomach made me feel short of breath and made me feel like I was working harder. After a few weeks I got used to it. Now I don't think twice about it. Shove some grub down my gullet and off I go.

GeneO 03-07-13 04:05 PM

Usually a bowl of cereal - 12 miles in.

wphamilton 03-07-13 04:05 PM

No, but I don't ride hard in the mornings.

Mumonkan 03-07-13 04:29 PM

always, i give myself an hour to wake up and get ready and eat food before i have to leave the house

im typically starving from the second i wake up, especially if i ate late the night before (unexplainable)

modernjess 03-07-13 05:03 PM

In the winter before the ride. I choke down oatmeal with walnuts and dried fruit, something about riding in the cold seems to warrant that.

Once it warms up i just ride, and usually eat a clif bar at my desk with a cup of coffee.

Baytree 03-07-13 05:03 PM

I'm a grouch if I don't get breakfast. Usually I just have some toast and juice... fast and easy.

stayfed 03-07-13 05:12 PM

I used to not eat but now I am at the gym every morning before work and like to have a healthy breakfast when I get back. I recommend getting up earlier.

Commodus 03-07-13 05:13 PM

No, I eat a granola bar when I get to work, and then a meal two hours later.

Trower 03-07-13 05:30 PM

Couple Eggs for me, holds me over and doesn't make me feel sick.

Vlaam4ever 03-07-13 05:43 PM

Never, mine is only 2 miles and I rarely take the long way in. oatmeal at 8:30 with a couple of cups of coffee.

wobbooze 03-07-13 06:04 PM

Yea oatmeal

arsprod 03-07-13 06:06 PM

Granola bar and coffee before 11 mile commute

alexaschwanden 03-07-13 06:26 PM

Usually cereal and milk.

Blues Frog 03-07-13 06:32 PM

If I don't eat, my guts will threaten to eat me. I start with half a dose of psyllium fiber in hot water. That stops the acid. Then I eat a small beakfast at some point.

merkong 03-07-13 06:43 PM

2 packs Quaker instant oats with my coffee... Only 7 miles each way but that's all I'll eat until nearly lunch. Lots of water though, after my coffee of course.

scoatw 03-07-13 06:47 PM

A bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter, blueberries and cinnamon with sugar-free maple syrup. And a glass of OJ to wash it down. breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Didn't your Mom ever tell you that.

RGNY 03-07-13 06:48 PM

just a large glass of water about 45min before my 10 miles. light breakfast at my desk.
