What is your top speed???

Mine is 31 miles an hour on a giant defy road bike. :)

megalowmatt 04-16-13 11:10 AM

36 or 37 on my Motobecane Lechampion Ti. I can't break 40mph no matter what I do.

jrickards 04-16-13 11:11 AM

Best I've done is about 56kmh downhill with a tailwind on my 29er.

fietsbob 04-16-13 11:12 AM

Another Pi**ing match? :notamused:

.. same speed as the rest of the Boeing 747..

or just by being on the planet , about

1,674.4 kilometres per hour (rotational) & 108,000 km/h (orbital)

I guess if that's how you see it.

ThermionicScott 04-16-13 11:15 AM

While commuting? 30 or 31 MPH on the fixed-gear.

groovestew 04-16-13 11:20 AM

I've yet to prove Einstein wrong.

noisebeam 04-16-13 11:20 AM

~570mph

You need to eat more cheeseburgers. It'll take care of that for you.

I've broken 40 MPH a couple of times on long downhills. Given a long enough hill, you're limited only by your aerodynamics, your weight and the rolling efficiency of your bike.

I ride with a couple guys who are 200lbs.+ and that's what they say. Really anything approaching 35 and I start to feel uneasy.

furballi 04-16-13 11:38 AM

~31 mph of flat with no wind, but only for a few seconds. At that speed, about 630 watts is used to overcome air resistance. To hit 37 mph, I have to output about 1050 watts (1.4 hp) to overcome air resistance! A world-class track sprinter can output about 2000 instantaneous watts.

noisebeam 04-16-13 11:51 AM

34.2mph to win a flat sprint on 48x15 fixed
48mph on long mountain decent on roadbike

JReade 04-16-13 11:55 AM

I've hit into the 30's on a flat before, but not on my commute. No downhills, so it's all leg.

droy45 04-16-13 11:56 AM

About 26 mph on flat and I've hit 32 downhill a few times.

Well then if we're talking strictly about commuting then it's *maybe* 30mph on a downhill, as were the other speeds I posted. Personally I don't think those speeds are anything to brag about. I probably get close to that speed every commute since that's the way I take. And I'm not necessarily trying, just coasting, so again nothing to brag about there.

By the way, its a discussion forum. Let's discuss.

pretty slow, pretty slow!

~462 millions mph (via webcam)

RidingMatthew 04-16-13 12:20 PM

38MPH on my road bike, downhill. I felt pretty comfortable but when I told my wife. She was like "WHAT?!?!" that is so fast. My kids were impressed haha I too would like to break 40mph

Fastest commuting I have no idea since I don't have a computer on my commuter or mountain bike.

imi 04-16-13 12:32 PM

What is your top speed???

Always on the edge of being late to work, so often pushing it. OTOH I'm never fast in the morning :/
Fully loaded down a hill in New Zealand last year I hit my all time speed record.

ItsJustMe 04-16-13 12:36 PM

Level ground/no wind, about 32 MPH. Same on both my road bike and my crappy/heavy hybrid - top speed really shouldn't depend on the weight of the bike, but aerodynamics. On the road bike I can SUSTAIN 32 MPH longer, but really not that long.

With a tailwind I can hit 34 to 36. Downhill I've been up to about 40. I just run out of gears with my old bike. I haven't had the road bike long enough to have it on a significant downhill in good weather.

noisebeam 04-16-13 12:36 PM

Restricting this my flat commute only, aided by tailwind:
32.1mph on fixed gear
34.0mph on road bike

caloso 04-16-13 12:45 PM

Commuting? 21.5mph, per Strava.

Commodus 04-16-13 12:51 PM

today?

66.8 km/h.

I was descending.

CommuteCommando 04-16-13 12:55 PM

28 mph flat-no wind. 43 mph with the help of Issac Newton.

spare_wheel 04-16-13 01:44 PM

your top speed in whatever context plus 5 mph.
