Commuter Gender

Just curious as to the ratio.

jrickards 04-25-13 11:12 AM

Hah! 100% male, I thought so! I have to go home and tell my wife!

ThermionicScott 04-25-13 11:48 AM

I'm not usually the PC police, but you left out a couple options.

fietsbob 04-25-13 11:56 AM

Like this is the whole population, It's Not .. more like who can, and bother to, post to this site,
from their computer at work.

[I post from home , then Go out]

tarwheel 04-25-13 12:06 PM

I don't see many other bike commuters around here, but the ratio seems about 50-50 among the other cyclists I see on my route.

PatrickGSR94 04-25-13 12:26 PM

You won't get any sort of accurate ratio here, because the large majority of cyclists are NOT on this forum.

Ah, yes. However, I was considering more of the physical gender rather than the sexual preference and although that also may create a question in the minds of the transgenders, they can just put what they will be after their change.

That's fine, I was just wondering about bike commuters.

I wasn't thinking of preference either, but there are folks who are intersex, neither, or may wish to continue identifying as "trans". ;)

it's such a sausage fest in here.

but i've found the same to be true of other internet forums i'm a member of (architecture, urban planning, transportation, city issues, etc.)

maybe it's just that internet forums tend to attract nerds, and most nerds just happen to be male?

It's not about what sex they wish they were; it's about what sex they are. It's the same question asked on the census form.

That's because there are no girls on the internet.

...which is also fairly backward. I'm not trying to raise a big stink here, but not all of the population is 100% male or female, and it wouldn't have taken all that long to add an option for "other", if nothing else. Are you guys offended that someone might not want to identify as "male" or "female"?

There might be some correlation between the predominantly male population here and the general failure to see your point.

ThermionicScott 04-25-13 03:18 PM

;)

dramiscram 04-25-13 04:42 PM

Male the whole week, female on saturday nights.

So as I don't commute on saturday nights the answer is male.

Was your wife worried that you spent too much time here?

I checked female so that they wouldn't feel so alone.

The point is the vanishingly small number of people born without a clear sex, followed by the fact that the vast majority of individuals in this small group have their condition corrected surgically.

Which merits leaving them out of the poll... why? (I know of at least one BFer who is trans.)

To put it another way: we already know that the vast majority of bike-commuters are males, and most of the ones who post on here are straight and white. What would be the point of a poll, if not to find out who *else* is out there, commuting? ;)

Mr. Hairy Legs 04-25-13 08:37 PM

I'd guess it's about 90% male on my commute.

This poll is not scientific. At this time there is 2062 users online and 101 on the commuting sub-forum but only 63 have voted. Furthermore there is a difference between internet and real life. People here are not necessarily the same who commute. During summer days i see as much men than women commuting around my place which doesn't mean a thing anyway.

+1

Happen to be a gringo male myself, but a friend of mine was born intersex and struggled with it all their life, been an eye opener for me.

Here in Seattle, I see a fair number of women commuters, once the weather improves. During the Winter I'd swear it is almost all guys, but my schedule is weird at times, so I get a odd sampling of what I see.

Actually, I did see a woman the other day, first one this year. (Woman on a bike, not just a woman, I'm not that far north!!)

You're right, there are more females spotted during the warmer months but also more bike commuters too.
