Reason #196 why I commute by bicycle...(VIDEO)

First, notice the mirror-smooth surface of the fresh tarmac on my main commuting route! Been waiting 20 years. And they removed one of two auto lanes, made the parking wider (less chance or winning the door prize), and will soon stripe a bike lane.

I left work tonight at 7PM same time the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival released 50,000 people. I passed the Fair Grounds during the mass exodus mayhem. I love my bike. Can't imagine commuting by car, especially during special events.

Video is less than 03:00 minutes. Have fun.

Perfect soundtrack pick! I enjoyed it.

That's a beautiful piece of pavement.

Cool! Did you STOP at the red light right at the end Joey?! ;)

Only until crossing traffic presented a gap.

You strike me as someone who doesn't give a rat's @$$ if there's a bike lane or not. :D And you totally scalped those riders at 1:42!

Do you have any pics of the bike you're on? I don't recall seeing it in the commuter bike pic thread. Maybe I missed it.

TomCat_Ford 04-27-13 08:16 AM

Looks like a smooth ride. I don't see how anyone would want to commute by car through there!

JoeyBike 04-27-13 08:45 AM

For photo of the bike go to the following thread and look at the first frame of the vid. The rest of the vid shows the same street during construction.

Mostly I don't care about bike lanes, or don't confine myself to them, but on that street in the vid, a bike lane is crucial for one thing - keeping the tour buses and city buses from wrecking the surface where most cyclists want to be. I already noticed tour buses are centering themselves between the median and the white stripe for parked cars to the right. A striped bike lane would give those heavy vehicles a different set of lines to center between largely keeping the right wheels of the buses off the smooth stuff where most cyclists will be riding. Let the cars, trucks, and buses wreck their lane while preserving the bike lane.

Enjoyed :thumb: Jealous my commute itsn't that much fun !!:D

I can totally see why you're happier on a bike. That traffic would drive me crazy.

And yeah, that was the perfect song.

Man that was cool, it was like playing a video game lol. Hello from a fellow Louisianaian!

Thankfully, mine is not that much fun most of the time. The Jazz Fest lasts two consecutive weekends in April and May. I try to NOT leave work at 7PM those days but I had no choice the day I made the vid. It's not the cars so much but all of the drunk Meanderthols potentially filtering across the road without looking when the traffic stops that frightens me.

Another BF poster described NOLA traffic perfectly: A Rat F***. I can't think of better terminology. A bike does set one free here. The city is compact so almost anyone can get across town in less than 30 minutes. I can be anywhere in roughly 20 minutes. Seems silly to even get in a car for a 20 minute trip, not including the traffic issue.

Thanks.

Not much challenge from traffic in Bunkie last time I visited there. Probably much less now that I-49 is done. Thanks for the shout out!

All that gasoline burning for nothing... :D The pedestrians were going faster than the auto traffic!

No it's not much of a challenge. It's just the way I like it. People around here aren't use to cyclist, it's almost unheard of around here. I get a lot of crazy looks while riding through town. The guys over here at the Firehouse give me a hard time about it also. Especially when I bought a helmet, they said I look like a nerd. I replied, go screw your self. Lol.....

I can't imagine how a person would have to look in New Orleans to get crazy looks from the locals.

As for the helmet, I am sure most cyclists would admit helmets look fairly nerdy. So the fire-bugs have a point about that.

Sounds like Bunkie needs a Critical Mass ride so you don't look so strange to the locals. :thumb:

Just do your thing man. Firefighters are a bored bunch 99.9% of the time. You should pity them.

Joey, I actually work at the firehouse. Lol. Been there 11 years. It's all good.

Haha, yea, there a bunch of pricks. I'm the only one over here that is smaller framed and can do something without loosing my breath in 5 minutes. Most of them have a gut the size of China and are on high blood pressure medicine. So I guess they take the cheap shots out on me because deep down inside they wish they could get their fat lazy a** of the recliner and get in shape. But it's all good.

I had a boss who weighed 350 pounds. He said I was crazy for riding a bike. I just smiled. I would have said that he's crazy for thinking riding a bike is too hard. Of course, he didn't like climbing the steps at work, either, and it was just a three-story building. But since he was my boss, I just kept it to myself.
