6-year anniversary commuting

I just realized that yesterday I passed my 6-year anniversary since I started bike commuting. I began planning to ride once a week, on dress-down Fridays. It quickly turned into 2-3 days/week and more. My commuting started out at 22 miles round trip, but increased to 30+ miles a year-and-half ago when my office relocated. Here are some stats:

Total commute miles: 23,358
Total round-trip commute trips: 951
Commute days/week: About 4 on average, year-round
Commute miles/month: currently about 430 on average
Weight lost: 30 lbs.

Congratulation for an important milestone.

That's a lot of miles

Congrats! i passed my 5 year anniversary in april!

it started out as a multi-modal folding bike/train commute, the biking portion of which was about 7 miles/day, 3 days/week.

after a couple months of getting in shape, i stretched that out to about 14 miles of riding a day, 4 days/week

and after several more months of that, i ditched the train and folding bike altogether and just rode the whole 28 mile round-trip on the bike, 5 days a week.

my commute has since grown slightly to about 29 miles round-trip with a move, and i'm still at it most days, though in winter i probably only average around 4 days/week because of weather. (i still have a ridiculously easy train commute that really tempts me when the weather is especially stupid)

Congratulations tarwheel! That's a great accomplishment and you're still going strong!

Congratulations! I'll hit six years of dedicated bike commuting in September.

I just hit 4 months, where's my party?

JK, great job tarwheel, that's very impressive!

951 seems really specific, I'm curious how you track your stats. Do you have everything all recorded and computerized, or are you computing an estimate?

Congrats to the OP.
I just finished my 5th winter of commuting, looking forward to many more.

Bluish Green 05-01-13 07:45 PM

You rock! Someday I hope to hit those kind of numbers, too.

ItsJustMe 05-02-13 07:04 AM

Neat! I don't really know when I started, sometime in 2004 I think. I suppose I should find out so I could use the 10 year as a chance for a party. I think you're doing more miles than me, at around 9 years I'm just close to 30,000 miles, so when you've done 9 you'll probably have gone farther than I have.

I have been using an on-line website, www.mycyclinglog.com, to track all of my mileage for years. It is a great website and free. You just enter your mileage and time, and it calculates your average speed and keeps track of all your data. You can identify your rides with specific tags, such as commuting, so you can total the mileage separately.

Nice -- I'll have to check that out. Hopefully it's easier to use than mapmyride.com. I use that sometime to plan out long rides and preview elevation profiles, but it seems slow and cumbersome so I'd never use it regularly to track my stats.

Great accomplishment...Congrats! :thumb:

I'm coming up on 6 years later this month and my total mileage, including a lot of recreational miles, is still a bit short of your commuting total. Nice work.

I use Strava during rides, and ridewithgps.com to plan rides in advance. Works out pretty well for me. I used MapMyRide sporadically last year, and the year before, but it never really caught on for me. The Strava iPhone app is really simple to use, though I wish it had more ride editing features available so I don't always have to get on the website to change the bike I used on the ride, for example.

Good on ya tarwheel. I'm still sitting at zero myself. :(

I've been using bikejournal.com to track the same stuff. They also have a great forum and a Commuter Century Challenge.

That really is pretty awesome, man. Big time congrats!

gerv 05-02-13 08:16 PM

Yes congratulations... I think I'm in my 8th year right now. Or maybe 9th. Wasn't one of those a leap year?
