non-aggressive helmets for the summer?
 

Hey all, so I'm trying to look for a helmet to wear, but all of the light weight ones seem to look a little... aggressive. The other style (bern, specialized street smart) look like they'll cook my head in the summer. Is there anything lightweight and not so flame-y?

Not sure if this is the right place, but since riding to work (9 miles round trip) is my main biking experience this is the only forum I read. :)

Some commuter models (like Bell Commuter) are ventilated but with plain graphics.

Yeah, you just need to shop around a bit. I've found low-key helmets at Performance Bike, in big department stores, and on Amazon. All around the $20 price point, BTW.

Catlike, probably has the best ventilated helmets that do not have the extra flash.

The Giro Air Attack is suppose to have great ventilation while looking like a skate board helmet.

The Giro Reverb is a great suggestion. I like the retro style and built in visor.

The POC Trabec is a really nice helmet- premium construction.
I've only seen one or two around town but they look really cool in a non-aggressive/racer style.

I had a Bern and you're right, they are hot in the summer.

Currently use a Bell Metro - similar to the Citi - Metro was available in two sizes instead of one-size-fits-most-but-not-always-very-well.

If you're looking for retro, might be some Bell Bikers online somewhere. The reflective tape I used is kinda aggressive, though.................

I have a Nutcase helmet for commuting - Although the vents are small, it's very cool even in the heat and I tend to get really hot really fast.

Whenever I see Catlike helmets, all I can can think of is insect pods just waiting to hatch. *shudder*

My wife recently bought this exact helmet and really likes it. I might do something like it as well. Its very nice and not overly aggressive.

Compared to a motorcycle helmet, maybe.

I use a Schwinn Traveller (?) from Target and it keeps my head cool on the hot afternoons here in Albuquerque - though I haven't used it in summer yet. It's nothing fancy and is about $20. I does have a nice twist size adjustment like nicer construction hard hats do...

I've ridden both the Bell Citi and the Metro, with a spare Metro in the basement (picked up a couple when they were closing them out). The Muni looks similar and I have no problem riding it in hot weather. In the winter I just cover the vent holes.

I use the Muni, and I would definitely recommend it.

I love the lo-invis yellow color. It's ugly, but a helmet is a safety device and nothing does more for safety than decreased invisibility. Some review indicate that the color fades too quickly. I've been using mine for about 7 months with no noticeable loss of color, but of course it's been cloudy here for most of that time.

Removing the visor is normally the first thing I do with a new helmet, but in this case the light clip (which is designed to hold a Blackburn Flea) made it worth keeping on through the winter. It also has a loop in the back to hold the rear Flea. These little lights weigh next to nothing and provide a great supplement to bike-mounted light cannons. The integrated flashing lights on the rear strap are a nice idea, but they're weak and eat batteries pretty quickly. On the other hand, you can get replacement batteries online at a rate of about 10 for $2.

There are two things I don't like about this helmet. First is that the forehead padding collects sweat and randomly dumps the bulk of it in your eyes when you look down. That's annoying but not annoying enough to get me to use my all-black helmet for commuting. The second thing I don't like is that the ratcheting chin strap, while a nice feature, tends to cause me to pull my beard hairs when I unbuckle it. I have a very bushy beard in the winter. Again, it's not so bad that I wouldn't recommend the helmet and it probably wouldn't be an issue at all for those less folically gifted in the chinal region.

Bell Citi is good.

I also think the Giro Indicator is a great all-around helmet. Comfy, good fit, high quality construction, affordable. Get one in white for great visibility and cool temps in summer too. It even looks pretty cool (for a bike helmet) and you'll appreciate it when you get caught in the rain and the visor is keeping the worst of it out of your eyes. 4.5 stars in 300+ reviews on Amazon is no joke.

The Giro Indicator is the black helmet I mentioned before. I'm not a big fan of the fit. Maybe my head shape is odd, but I feel like it isn't stable front to back...like it wants to creep forward a bit on my head. It doesn't creep forward, but it feels that way. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to something. If you take the visor off it leaves a couple of ugly holes in the outer shell. Overall, it's not a bad helmet.

I think the Muni has a new fit system. The Metro and Citi weren't bad but a little more fit flexibility can't hurt.

I have one, and I experienced a creeping forward issue like you describe. But I found, via judicious adjusting of the straps, I can make it sit where I want on my admittedly odd-shaped skull.

Yeah, the Muni comes in a couple of different sizes and has an elastic band in the back to hold the straps to your head. The Citi (at least) used a dial in back, and I think it might have been one size fits some.

Judging the book by it's cover are we! The internal off the head suspension makes sense that it would be a much cooler helmet. The pros that have used it, like it and say the same thing 'great ventilation'. It is cool if you do not want to keep an open mind on it, especially at the price. For me, the drawback is not being able to attach my HID helmet light to it.
