Back to Road Bikes - Need Advice

Well, after strictly mountain biking for the past 20 years or so, I once again find myself in an area with nice bike paths and the potential to commute via bike (or at least partial bike/bus). I've been looking for a nice bike that would work for commuting up to 30 miles a day, touring, and of course some leisure riding. I've got a great shop here in town and have checked out the Salsa Vaya, All City Space Horse, Surly LHT, Handsome Devil, Handsome XOXO, and a few other nice bikes. I'm leaning towards the Space Horse or Vaya as they felt best to me. I wanted to love the XOXO, but it didn't feel as good (but then again the fame was too small for me).

All that said, any input or insights? Anything else I should check out. I've been mountain biking for quite a while with a couple of old bikes, and the world of bikes has sure become more diverse! I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

How 'serious' of a road bike are you looking at? Just something with drop bars,or a performance machine? If you ain't skeered of alloy and CF(those Rivendell ads are pretty scary),I'd suggest a Giant Defy or Cannondale CAAD(I believe the current model is CAAD10). I own a Defy, and have test ridden CAAD's,and they ride really nice and can take reasonable size tires(28's) with fenders and rear racks.
