Commute to Offutt AFB made easier
Just saw an article about bike lanes being opened along Ft. Crook Road in Bellevue. There's going to be a ribbon cutting ceremony tonight preceding a 10-mile ride along the road that leads to Offut AFB.
Ribbon cutting at 6:30, riding at 7:00 http://www.omaha.com/article/2013070...307019942/1685 From the article: Cyclists can now traverse about five miles of Fort Crook Road within their own lanes in both directions. The idea is that people can commute or travel for pleasure from Omaha to Offutt Air Force Base and other parts of Bellevue. “They've just got a nice clean shot down to Offutt without having to worry about traffic,” Public Works Director Jeff Roberts said. |
I was in the AF from 1982-1995, commuted to most of my bases when not living on base housing (even then, but I don't call that commute). I wish there were bike lanes going to base back then! Some places, like Michigan, were a real challenge in the winter. Altus Oklahoma had the worst winds, enough for me to buy a fiber glass cone and windshield for the bike. And add the farm trucks, redneck pickups, oh, the good old days. Now a days is another kind of fun in South Florida traffic! Thanks for bringing memories back! Double O

yeah, getting onto an AF base can be daunting. Last base I was stationed at, there were 3 lanes each way at the guard gate.
