I posted a bike - no one has stepped up to an opinion ;)

Retro nipponesque-dutch paint job is attractive. Love the bars -- is that a weird thing to say? Some points are deducted because the dual bottles and front rack are commuter inappropriate. The honjo/vo fenders and brass bell also seem like a bit of a mismatch with the paint job.

Very close to hot, for me.

KonAaron Snake 11-17-13 12:27 PM

Curious why you'd define a front rack and dual bottles as commuter inappropriate...keeping in mind that one of the few things I'd change is adding a third set of bosses under the down tube. I drink and sweat a lot ;)

I actually like the front rack more than the rear - the balance feels great and when I have a project at work and need LOTS of space, that front rack came in handy.

My comments were more about "looks" than functionality. And to me it looks more like a long-distance tourer than a commuter. (IMO, a coffee mug would have given it more commuter pathos than two bottles).

Gotcha! You're right - it's sort of a do it all bike rather than a true commuter.

I'm actually a fan of tourers as commuters...you might not usually need the extras, but it's nice to have when you do.

I don't drink coffee so it would be completely useless for me.
I thought about get Tri seat post mounts for 2 extra bottle, but I like my saddle bag, & rear light more. :)

I'd be satisfied with a "lukewarm", but it's up to you!

That's a really nice ride, but IMHO, the paint job doesn't do the bike justice.

I know I'm a snoot, I just don't like flat bars, tig welding, or straight blade unicrown forks. I have to go stone cold. Also negative points for the non-drive side photo.

TBH I was a little comprehensive when I got it with the straight blades, but it's really nimble and I've gotten use to it. The bars are probably the worst thing I like on it and might change them to drop bars in the near future, IF I can find a solution for the nexus 3 shifter.

As for TIG welding... deal with it! :p

Anyway... at the price and condition I got it, I can live with alot of little faults!

KonAaron Snake 11-17-13 03:47 PM

Oh completely - it's a great build, it's just not attractive to MY subjective (and silly) ethos. I think most of my bikes are ugly, but still like riding them ;)

Is 41 the c/v? If so - guilty!

The 41 is the roadie forum, our "Hot or Not" thread is quite subjective as well. So much that its comical @ times.

KonAaron Snake 11-17-13 05:29 PM

Doesn't seem like anyone takes it too seriously though. My main commuter is by no means hot, but I enjoy it anyway.

It really needs a CF kickstand to go with the CF fenders and the CF spacer above the stem.

Mine has the same thing going on, but I could not find any other folder even close to large enough for me-- I still need about another inch of seat post...!

Perhaps the best looking Dahon I have ever seen.

one person's kitsch is another person's gold. in fact, i've always believed that the perfect commuter is a personal and idiosyncratic choice rather than some sort of platonic ideal. for some this might be a walmart BSO, a trek 7100 hybrid, a vintage nishiki, a german touring bike, a bridgestone XO, a 40 lb pashley,a 22 lb titanium brompton, a fredly orbea diem, or even a 15 grand s-works road bike. it's all good.

How could you possibly make cyclists look bad with a full-carbon machine like that?

H8Rz gonna h8.

the fenders are just fredly carbon print -- even i can't muster the shamelessness to buy $318 berthoud carbon fenders.

Looks very effective, and I like the build a lot in terms of function. I don't understand the rear fender, poop or get off the pot, but otherwise I think it's smart...

I can't call it hot, but only because of one thing - that bulbous Shimano crank...I guess my pet peeve are Shimano cranks, they're just hideous with one or two exceptions. I'm not a CF guy and I'm not usually into straight bars, but it's such a clever build that it works for me. This is a case where the sum is greater than the parts.

yeah...the shimano cranks are fugly (and a pain to work on). i was considering the 6600 crank but finally went with the 6700 because i like to imagine that i can feel a difference in power transfer. i somewhat regret the choice...

i ran p35s on this bike for years but started using race blades because i like to take the fenders off when it's dryish. (i have a rain bike that wears fenders year round.)

spare_wheel 11-18-13 03:36 PM

Hot.
The juxtaposition of fat slicks and drops on a dahon is all sorts of awesome!
I like the tape color choice but the saddle is too busy for me.

Can you post details on the build.
