Time for new pedals!
Saturday I was riding around town, and noticed a click from the cranks/BB area of my Felt road bike, when the left crank went just past the down tube. It only happened when pedaling while standing, out of the saddle, and only when putting the power down on the left pedal/crank arm. At first I thought oh crap, my BB is going out. Bike barely has 1,500 miles on it since I bought it brand new in September of last year.
Well that evening I had my bike in the stand at home and noticed my left SPD pedal made that "noisy" bearing noise when I spun the pedal around by hand. Right pedal was silent. Also could feel some wobbling in the pedal. Keep in mind that these SPD pedals are no-name pedals that came on my old KHS bike that bought used back in 2006, but I never used them until I got this Felt bike. I removed the spindle from the pedal and sure enough could feel plenty of movement in the bearings. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/IMG_7880.jpg I've been wanting new pedals anyway, something dual-purpose so that I can use my bike shoes for commuting and longer rides, or regular shoes for more leisurely rides around town, with family etc. Up until now I've been swapping my SPD's and platform pedals off my KHS back and forth on the road bike depending on the type of ride I was doing, and it was really starting to get old. So I just ordered a set of Shimano PD-A530 dual SPD/Platform pedals from Amazon. Went with silver because the reviews said the black paint got torn up really easily, especially if shoe cleats were used on the platform side momentarily. Should be getting them just in time for a local midnight charity ride this coming Saturday evening. :) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...CL._SX385_.jpg |
Welgo and Shimano cleats are slightly different , so when you get the new pedals
change the cleat on your shoes, too . Welgo is really close to Shimano, visually, IDK which you already have.. [odds are good that's what they are] |
The A530's are my favorite multi-purpose pedals. I spin those around on my cyclocross commuter.
About 12,000 smooth miles on them now. Really nice shape, size, weight for what I like in a pedal. Most of the time in SPD sandals, Pearl Izumi's, Keen Austins. But, they are hands down my favorite pedals when riding in my Vibram Five Fingers or barefoot, as I very rarely ever wear traditional shoes when not on the bike........Very comfy shape and surface for the human foot on the non-SPD side. Enjoy. Ride lots. Have fun. |

Yeah I pretty much wear shoes never, except on the bike or at work. :) @fietsbob I didn't have any cleats when I got my Felt bike, so the LBS owner hooked me up with a set of Bontrager shoes and also a set of Shimano cleats, which work in my current no-name SPD pedals. So I'm pretty sure they will work in these pedals also. I'll probably keep the cleats that come with these as a spare replacement set to use later. |
woohoo pedals arrived today! I rode around the block at the office a couple of times, with my normal office shoes (very flexible minimalist shoes called Stem Primal Origins) and also my bike shoes. Seems to work great both ways. Bearings are extremely smooth. I'm wondering if they'll loosen up at all such that the weight of the pedals make them hang one way or the other. Right now they just stay situated how they were in their last touched position regardless of crank position.
I'll be riding home today with the bike shoes. Then I'll take them off to get an actual weight when I get home. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps71e2d099.jpg Manual Shamual! :p http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6a6642a3.jpg Came with new cleats, but I think I'll just save these in case my current cleats get too worn. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa0406f4d.jpg My dumb @$$ stuck one shoe onto one of the pedals, but then couldn't get it back off because not enough leverage. I actually had to install the pedal to the bike with the shoe attached, then stick my foot into the shoe to twist off. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa801195b.jpg Also these come with the release tension fully tight so that was another reason why I couldn't get it off. I definitely had to back off that tension screw a bit. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps97c6af65.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps2401b5fc.jpg |
