Is there another term for Commuting ...

Is there another term for commuting (or any form of utility cycling for that matter) that is more appealing to the un-informed?

I don't know if it is just me, but in the age of the car in lots of countries around the world, cycling is seen as recreational or competitive activity, and the commuting and utility aspects are overlooked.

I am guessing this is because people see commuting as a chore, and want to get to work and back home again as quickly as possible, in their warm dry cars with radio and cd etc.... I am guilty of this myself to some extent, although cycling to work takes me 10 minutes more than driving and in rush hour probably 10 minutes less.

Similarly, I think a lot of people don't relish the idea of hauling their shopping or kids around on a bike - again partly due to the call of the car.

Some of it also has to do with the perception of others and the infrastructure.

but is there a nicer name for these practices that would appeal to others.

My preference is for utility cycling. I am retired so I don't commute but I do run errands on my bikes. I like both terms, commuting and utility, as they appeal to my own perceptions of usefulness.

I suppose you could say something like "green cycling" but I tire of the over use of the word green. Maybe ecoCyling? LifeCycling? Meh. Too yuppie for me. Even though I am the quintessential yuppie.

.

Thats because of the Market. I had the same in Portugal. At the stores, over 50% were mountain bikes, then a bit of road bikes. Commuting and utility bikes were well under 10% and don't look cool. Even if people went shopping with their car...that does not take 1full day a week. It's not just due to terrain that people don't cycle that much, it's almost all due to mentality. How many people do you see parking outside a crowded city center and taking out a folding bicycle to cycle the rest of their commute?

How about 'joyriding'!

We used to use that term for those who stole cars just to drive around in for fun, I think, but that's my point: I don't think the term is really used in that context anymore, so we could totally appropriate it for our own uses.

"I'm a joyrider." "Oh, I joyride every day!" "I was just getting fat sitting around in the car, so I started joyriding, and man, do I love it and feel great!"

Cage free or cage lite? "Cage" is a motorcycle term used for cars, trucks, etc....just like the way it sounds, may not catch on with the cycling crowd, and co workers and friends who don't have motorcycles don't know what I'm talking about but I still like the sound of it.

Notgrownup 09-15-13 09:26 AM

Yeah...deaded freaking ride to WORK.

Dunno, Cager seems popular here at least. In fact, this is where I learned the term.

RE: Another phrase for commuting, I haven't heard of one.

Transportational Cycling.

jeffpoulin 09-15-13 11:34 AM

I usually say "going to work", or sometimes I slip and say "my ride into work". I don't think anyone cares how I get there.

The OP was asking about terms that might change the perception of bike commuting from a burden into something more appealing.

I think some people have the perception that people who commute via bicycle do so because they love cycling or the environment and that those who "ride a bicycle to work" do so because their drivers license has been suspended or revoked. I'd stick with "commuting". ;)

ThermionicScott 09-15-13 01:24 PM

"Yuck" to just about everything suggested in this thread. I "ride my bike to work because it's more fun" and I can produce my driver's license quickly if anyone wants to question that.

Where I live, joyriding still means stealing a car to drive around in. I think that bicycle commuting is a perfectly lovely term. Even drivers know what you mean when you say it.

Maybe the dutch or the danes have a good word that we can steal.

Hmmmm. I get hulpprogramma fietsen in dutch and bryggers cykling in danish for utility cycling. Bicycle commuting comes out as cykel pendling in danish or fiets woon-werkverkeer in dutch.

The perception of bike commuting by people who do it, or by those who only view it is not affected in the slightest by what either group calls it.

A rose by any other name...

It's called riding your bike to work. Who cares about the connotation of it?

I tell people routinely, as does my sister:

"If you're not feeding me, financing me, or f***ing me, your opinion doesn't matter."

I've opted to change the term for "work" to "the eight hours in between bike rides."

After a 10-day vacation filled with bike rides, that's exactly what I want to call "work."

Just for the record, that idea is not original. I lifted it from someone else on this forum!

Yes, I remember seeing it in someone else's signature here. ;)
