Fenders with light/reflector mounts
 

Hello again! I'm trying to hunt up some fenders for my 700x35 wheel unit, and I'm wondering if anyone could suggest a model that has a rear mount built in for reflectors or lights?

I think most fenders now are plastic, not like the old metal ones, so i don't think you'll find them with mounts for reflectors & lights. plus, because they are thin (mine are) I wouldn't mount anything on them other than reflective tape. There are lots of reflective tape options out their for cycles. I know I got some nice stuff from REI for my fenders and helmet. my lights at mounted on my bars and rear rack.

There's no "mount," really. You just drill holes where you need them and mount the thing.

I mounted my dynamo light to a planet bike cascadia fender, even though it's plastic and people say it wouldn't work.

Over the last 5 years or so a lot of lower priced options for aluminum and steel fenders have become available from folks like Velo-Orange. You'll just want to go about 10 mm wider than the tire.

"bolts to the fender to prevent theft". So instead of just yanking the light a would-be theif would likely end up destroying the light and/or the fender trying to get it off. :rolleyes:

You'll more than likely have to measure and drill/punch out your own holes, I'm afraid.

In addition to the above mentioned PDW Fenderbot, Peter White has a couple of different models from Spanniga. The Spannigas lack a blink mode; I'm not sure if the Fenderbot does or not.

Ok, I can muster DIY. I'd been wondering about the plastic / metal, though. Just a casual search through Amazon has made me notice many are rather ambiguous. Going to see about digging up a set of alu.

The European-spec SKS P-series comes with a reflector on the back and a mudflap on the front in either 35 or 45 mm widths. I own three sets.

Sadly, the place I used to buy them, Ribble Cycles UK, no longer ships them to the US. You may want to shop around the other British and European web sites to see if you can find someone who will ship them here.

As for the DIY method, if you go this route, don't mount to the fender. Mount to the metal bracket that attaches to it. On US-spec SKS P-series I've mounted a plain old flattish, squarish Cat-Eye reflector to the mount. Just drill out one of the rivets and replace it with a screw.

EDIT: Found a set of SKS Bluemels at Bike24.de that not only ships with a reflector on the rear, but is pre-wired for a dynamo taillight. I've purchased from Bike24.de before. No problems.

They also show two MTB fenders from SKS with a reflector/light mount, so apparently, ya gotta go Euro.

The Velo Orange set I have for a build I have planned has a hole that looks like it's about the right height for the mount that came with either my PBSF or Radbot, so I'm going to give that a try once I get the bike painted/built back up.

I put a strip on the back of all my fenders. Usually put strips on the chain and seatstays too. Can even color-match to your bike.

Even comes in black! One of my local fishing shops sells this stuff:

Skip forward to the 3 minute mark and watch the ones on the desk.

Busch & Muller Seculite Plus Rear Mudguard Dynamo Light bolts to the metal bracket of SKS chromoplastic.
They used to have a conductive strip insulated from the bicycle earth circuit. Anyone ever tried to use this ?

I've considered getting some reflective paint and doing it up Dutch style in the back, but maybe I can mock it up with tape...
