Jamis Satellite Comp and panniers

I've been looking at the Jamis Satellite Comp and test rode one tonight. The thing that caught my attention was if there would be enough room for panniers.

The measurement was 16" from center of bottom bracket to rear wheel.

The sales person said the aurora was more touring design and has 17" bottom stays.

I measured my current bike and it is 19".

Will my size 11 feet have any problems with a 16" stay and panniers?

thanks

Honestly, I don't think so. it has a 415mm chainstay and that's pretty small. I'm looking at the Jamis Aurora for my next ride. It has a 440mm chainstay and will work well with panniers.

My bike has 16.3" chain stays on 26" wheels. I had heel strike with my first set of panniers (bought used- since traded for mess bag). Research indicates that a different rack with a longer platform may have prevented this (current rack is 12" long inside the tubular frame). I occasionally have heel strike with my old Nashbar Townie grocery panniers, but that is largely attributed to either not having them mounted as far back as possible or having my foot too far back on the pedal (platform w/no clip or strap).

Depending on your current rack and pannier combo, you may or may not have any issues.

Idea- see if the LBS will let you do a test fit of your rack and (empty) pannier(s) to check for heel strike and then reevaluate your options then.
