I go with the full length running pants here without underwear. The price is quite good and the quality is much more than I need.

Any alternatives to jockstraps?

I'm a roadie(wannabe) and do recreational rides on weekends. I wear my old worn out lycra shorts under a pair of pants/shorts to commute or run errands on if I know I'll be off the bike.

Another vote for these. I actually buy the longer version for better comfort. I have been commuting for a few years and they have held up well. They sometimes also go on sale which is always good.

I'm thinking about buying those. They are made of wicking material, right?

tri-shorts with a thin liner is not like wearing regular cycling shorts. very comfortable on or off the bike. but if I was off the bike for the day, I would change to normal underwear.

+1. On a 15-mile RT commute, once I found the right saddle, all I needed were the shorts linked above.

With that price tag, they'd better not go wrong.

I always wonder why bicycle gear is so much more expensive than generic sporting clothing items. For instance, I bought a pair of American Eagle "performance" running pants for $30. OTOH, a pair of Novara Headwind bike pants (no padding) cost $80.

Actually they were $39 on TheClymb when they had their warehouse clearance sale. These aren't just shorts, they have a detachable chamois liner and zip pockets.

I recently got two pairs of these Baleaf padded liner shorts, and have no complaints...

Why, why why do you punctuate like that? They semi-haiku style of the lines/paragraphs is painful enough, but the random misplaced commas and bizarre 2/3 ellipses are actually headache inducing.

If that's $39, I agree it's a good price, but I still believe that cycling gear is expensive in general. My $80 Novara pants don't have a chamois attached to it. I try to find clearance and other good deals online and at the LBS, but they're still rather pricey. I hope those items i shelled out a small fortune for will last at least a few years.
