Phone is in my pannier, so no. I have seen it though. Usually the cyclist is going about 5mph and weaving back and forth.

This lets me know if I have to pull over and check a call or call back.

My wife has her own personal ringtone, as well as my immediate family members. Anyone else can either call incessantly until I pull over, or just leave a message and wait. As for texting, yeah...I'm nowhere near that coordinated, and not as indestructible as I used to be. I always shudder at the thought of using speech-to-text programs.

I always read BikeForums.net while riding, it's OK though, reading is easier than texting.

cobrabyte 10-15-13 12:07 PM

I multi task while riding all the time: putting on / removing a jacket, eating, switching from glasses to sunglasses or vice versa, taking pictures with my camera or phone, texting, taking phone calls.

Never in busy traffic though.

chefisaac 10-15-13 12:12 PM

On a group ride, a guy was messing with his phone with strava while we started to ride post stop and he hit a parked car and went over the bars. I felt bad for him but sorta funny at the same time.

skins_brew 10-15-13 12:48 PM

I keep my phone in my trunk bag usually, and it's almost always on vibrate, so I won't hear a ring/notification.

I have seen people riding on major roads in DC texting with both hands, not wearing a helmet to boot.

'Dead Peasants Insurance' is a policy taken out on another person , but naming your self as the beneficiary
when they Die from their errors , or being on the job in your factory
doing hazardous things that already make you Money.
so you are insuring them against your loss of income derived from their exploitation..in event of their death.

I was once ghost-riding a bike with one hand and shifted gears (with a down-tube-mounted shifter) with the other hand, while riding uphill.

I sometimes chew gum while cycling; lock up your kin folk for their own safety!

I see it all the time but it boggles the mind that some of you will text or talk and ride. Are you that important or is the ride that unimportant that you ruin it with using the phone? The ride is to get away from all of that.

+1.

And I wouldn't even try it anyway.

a ride is commute for me, nothing more/less. i usually read on the bus or subway ... why not talk on the phone while commuting?

alan s 10-15-13 03:01 PM

My riding time is devoted exclusively to riding. The only exception is if I'm expecting an important call, in which case I'll stop to take the call. Otherwise, it can wait.

sure, but I wouldn't calling riding "important." my life is very nice and balanced outside of work/riding and i keep it that way on purpose. riding is a little pleasurable, but calling it dedicated personal time is a little extreme, isn't it?

I also love playing tennis, but I don't text anyone between points. Kind of takes away from the enjoyment of the activity.

why sorry ... i go rock climbing and XC/alpine skiing when i want sport. it's green and that why i like biking ... plus the UK bus system is miserable (in the purest sense of the word).

edit: the other less PC way to say it is ... i feel sorry to hear that people find commuting time as personal time/sport ... must be a tough life ;)

It's easy to think you can get away with texting while driving. But on a bike, you're so much more directly subject to every shift in balance, you're so much more exposed and vulnerable...in my case, my sense of self-preservation makes me very leery of messing with my phone at all. I think it's more irresponsible to text and drive, but more clueless to text and ride.

greenteei89 10-15-13 06:42 PM

Ive seen it... Never really tried though. I have a hard enough time surviving my commute with all the cars around with drivers that are testing and distracted.

Leebo 10-16-13 09:07 AM

Phone is in the pannier. The ring tone is my rear hub at a fast coast. When I'm on the bike," can't hear the phone" by design.

cobrabyte 10-16-13 11:19 AM

Compared to what I used to do on my BMX as a kid, texting+riding is tame. I'm surprised some of y'all have the courage to get out of bed in the morning with all the worry you seem to live with.

ShartRate 10-16-13 11:28 AM

I've played with my phone while riding my bike on a bike trail, taking pictures and stuff. That was tough enough, but responding to text messages? I couldn't do that, especially not with any cars within 100 yards. As with others, my phone sits in my panniers and I have to get off the bike in order to use it.

Living in a college town, I do see kids doing it, but not with the same frequency as those kids riding the motor scooters. I think the kids on the bikes must get more scares.

And I used to blow things up as a kid. Big fireballs and all.

And shoot things - with everything from BB guns to rifles.

It was still ****ing stupid.

nah, you're just old & scared of life now. It's ok.

...and I still shoot things with my rifle, food.

walrus1 10-16-13 11:56 AM

I'd probably run into something or fall off my bike attempting to do this. Whenever I see someone texting whilst cycling I'm kind of impressed at first. Then I remember that their being horribly unsafe. I text at red lights for brief conversations or when I get to my destination. I usually don't take calls since I don't keep anything in my ears while riding. If a call is earth shatteringly important I'll pull over for it.

RidingMatthew 10-16-13 01:02 PM

i dont text while riding. I dont text while driving. I am more tempted to respond if I am driving but I dont honestly reply 99 % of the time. While riding my phone is in the pannier and i don't hear it ring or alert me to texts. Life will continue and be okay until I stop riding and look at my phone at the end of my ride.

wilfried 10-16-13 01:22 PM

Bad idea, and I hate people who do it. I've seen everything, including people blithely talking on their cell phones while going the wrong direction in heavy traffic. I'd be happy to consign them to the Darwin Awards, except for the fact that they might take me down with them.

KGood 10-16-13 02:16 PM

I'll admit I've text while biking but I live in a relatively small town with little traffic.
