My mirror is 100% waterproof, works without battery and tells me 100% of whats going on behind me. Helmet mirrors rock. A simple sweep and I can see everything in total picture. We are talking less then 50 grams of weight (not that I really care about weight lol).

I would rather put my 200 bucks in my savings for my next Cannondale CAADX. A 15 dollar mirror does the trick.

I had attempted the same thing with a back-up camera setup, the kind you find in an auto-parts store. It's only about a third that price, but unfortunately unsatisfactory. Unless the Sharper Image system solves these problems I'd give it a pass.

Top problem: too hard to see in direct sunlight. Second problem: approaching cars are tiny in the little screen. So I sometimes had to shade it with one hand while hunched over squinting close to the screen - kind of defeats the purpose if you need to take the lane in traffic.

The last problem may have just been the low quality and not apply to the Sharper Image camera, but it couldn't cope with sudden shifts between bright and dark areas. After several seconds it would be fine, but I look in the mirror for now, not five seconds down the road.

Much as I like gadgets it would be really risky to buy that without seeing it in action first.

Saw this at a bike show a couple of years ago. The guys who invented and marketed it seem like good people, but I agree with everyone here that a $20 mirror is a way better value.

They need to add a video recorder to that product, especially at that price point.
And as with automotive dash-cams, it needs to auto-generate fixed-length, time-stamped files of 1m, 3m, or 5m, and auto-overwrite the oldest files.

This gadget reminds me of the (possible apocryphal) story of how the two space programs dealt with the challenge of writing in space flight. The US spent millions of dollars on a pen that works in zero gravity. The Soviet Union used a pencil.

I'm going to go against the flow here and say it ins't a bad idea, though not so much as a rear view device, but as an event recorder. Combining the signals with a front mounted, and helmet mounted cameras for a synced split screen image would be a bike lawyers delight. Especially is the resolution was good enough to get licence plates.

When a system like that comes out for less than $200, I'll get one. For now I'm still a head turner. (Keep losing those dang eyeglass mount thingies, so gave up on them.)

How well does it work in direct sunlight? Not at all would be my guess. I would expect that it's exactly as visible as my phone screen in direct sunlight - not at all.

I'm sure the battery life is not as good as the years that a mirror works for either.

This is the sort of product that "design students" come up with, thinking that it's actually useful. I'm surprised it got to the point of anyone actually making one.

That's for a completely different purpose than the camera the OP posted. Also, it was clearly photographed by Sharper Image marketing - the primary photo shows it diligently filming the rider's crotch.
