quick detach panniers

Rather than stepping on someone else's thread, I decided to star my own.

I bought an Ibera PakRak Quick-Release Panniers (Single one), 30 L Capacity. And I bought a smaller one. The large one survived my summer, but didn't survive the GAP trail.

So now I am in the market for another 30 L + bag. I would like it to be some kind of quick detach setup. Larger than 30 L would be good. Some kind of internal pockets would be cool, but not needed. I have big feet so being able to mount the bag as far back as possible.

thanks

If the bag part of it is still in good shape but the attachment hardware is toast, I like to recomend to people that they do a hardware conversion to the ortlieb quick release hardware. I had a shopping-bag-type pannier that came with Rixen and Kaul (spelling?) hardware which I didn't like. I ordered some ortlieb hardware, drilled a couple new holes, and the bag works just how I want it to now. But depending on how much another new bag may cost, the parts for replacement plus shipping may be cost prohibitive... As far as I know, in the states, you can only get parts directly from their US distributor.

QL-1 and QL-2 Ortlieb hardware can be had from thetouringstore.com. I hear Arkel's Cam-Lock hardware is pretty slick as well.

The thing is the clips themselves survived, but the way to detach them is not quick any more. I should probably look into repairing them, but I lack tools where I am.

As far as ortlieb bags go, any recommendation? I am not sure how to shop for the size I want.

The Arkel camlock ships from this side of the border, pretty quick if i remember correctly. Works very well, but might be bit pricey for you. As long as you don't have a heel strike issue they work very well, I used to, but never lost a pannier (just the front clip would disengage but the rear would hold securely, although the pannier would rub the tire and get a wear mark from the tire) but after I changed racks to a longer version that reduced the heel strike issue I have nt had any problems. To be fair to Arkel, I have the Arkel Shoppers - big rectangular panniers with no cutout or angled side to reduce heel strike.

Ortleib's touring panniers run around 40L for the rears, and 25L for the fronts.

Just call Wayne or his sidekick Cormac at TheTouringStore.com, 1-800-747-0588. You can look stuff over on his web site, but he has no shopping cart, so you have to phone him anyway to place your order. Since you have to phone to order, you might as well phone to shop.

Wayne's philosophy is to be certain the customer is buying the right thing the first time, hence the personal service aspect of the telephone ordering. He won't sell you something he doesn't think is right.

I have both Ortleibs and Arkels. Of the two, I prefer Arkel's mounting hardware. It doesn't rattle over bumps.

One more note, I take pictures. I took my D7000 and a full sized tripod on tour. It took me a while, but I was able to figure out a way of carrying the tripod extended. This allowed me to pull the tripod quickly and take a shot. Then get going again.

rear is bigger, than front..

As for your tripod , laying it across the rear rack Ortliebs Roll closure bags
have a central strap and D ring that may give you a Lash point.
the cross strap, is also able to match the snaps and end strap on their Rack pack.

a Lg size rack pack is the full width of both panniers on the rack.

there are straps that secure the closure of the bag you may be able to use them as a Tripod tie-down.
