Presta Valve captive nut stuck

Hi all,

Would really appreciate any feedback about a problem I'm having with my presta valves. Just been trying to inflate my tube with a Presta valve and the captive nut on it seems to have gotten stuck. This doesn't let me put the pump on it appropriately to be able to inflate the tube.

Captive nut******************************?

Do you mean the one at the wheel that you don't need or the one at the end of the valve stem that you unscrew??

To insure accuracy:

Loosen, unscrew, screw in or, generally turn so you can inflate the tube.;)

Or, whatever anyone may call it. This is, after all, a forum.

One is always wrong.

Your post is not clear, but it sounds like the nut is stuck near the top of the valve stem. If true, it indicates that the nut and valve stem are cross threaded. Use two pliers and what ever force is needed to remove the nut. Then just leave the tube without a nut, no harm (even if you stripped the stem threads getting the nut off).

If you pull the stem off of the tube, then replace the tube and use more care to NOT cross thread the nut.

We aren't sure what you are asking.

Do you mean the small brass nut at the top of the valve stem, not the silver ring nut that tightens against the rim?

If it turns to loosen the valve, but no air goes in when you pump, you need to tap it after it's unscrewed to break a stuck seal. Tap it enough to hear a little air escape.

Its just the nut you have to unscrew a little bit on the top to inflate the tube.

The small brass nut on the top of the valve stem just barely turns! (like not even quarter of a turn) Just bought an old bike and the tubes are all the way out of air so, cant even tap it to see if the air comes out.

It is so small that it could be to tight to unscrew with fingers. No grip or leverage. Try a pair of common pliers, gently, you have good grip and a lot more leverage. Nutbuster overnight if that doesn't work.

Needle nose pliers work best for opening a stuck air valve.
