Tire Liners

After a recent flat, I became interested in Tire Liners. The one that caught my eye is Panarace's "Flat-Away". Anyone used them? What is this groups thought on using Tire Liners?

I have a set of Stop Flats 2 liners for my mountain bike. I got them for a race in goat head country this spring. I pulled a couple of thorns out of the tires after the race and didn't flat, so i guess they work. They're very heavy, but I can't say how much difference that makes.

For my commuter I prefer tires that prevent most punctures without extra help but still roll well. Schwalbe Marathon Supreme are my current favorite.

I used Mr. Tuffy's for a while, and then two tires developed slow leaks. When I went to the bike shop to have the leaks fixed, they found that the liners had moved and developed a fold, and at the point of the fold, like a folded piece of paper, a point had formed that had worn a hole in the tube. I finally had them taken out and got some Schwalbe Marathon Tour tires. It's been only a year on the new tires so I can't comment on them.

I used Mr. Tuffy's for years, but now I just use Gatorskin tires. Very happy.

Now, I am sure that I have just angered the God of Bike Flats and I will get a flat on my ride home from work.

Puncture resistant tires work better than tire liners.

Proper installation is key. I used to use Mr. Tuffy liners on my Ross touring bike in the early eighties, I had no problems with them.

I tried using tire liners with my studded tires, on my Xtracycle. I didn't pay attention when I was installing them, didn't work as well.

I use Mr. Tuffy tire liners. They work really well for goatheads. I've never had an issue with the liner itself causing a flat. You just have to install the liner correctly and everything is fine.

Whether they're worth it for you really depends on what's causing your flats. If not for goatheads I wouldn't bother with them. If I have strong tires, it seems like most of my other flats come from things that nothing would prevent (tacks, nails, large pieces of sharp wire).

I am definitely not a believer in tire liners. Though I have only tried Rhinodillos. I was having a heck of time with flat tires commuting on the Colorado Springs bike paths and roads (a flat about every 70 miles) due to glass, I was using cheap performance brand slicks on my MTB. Then I tried the tire liners, like you I'd read reviews about people having trouble with the liners rubbing through the tube, but I figured the people just installed them wrong. I was very careful installing them and I am pretty sure they were seated correctly. The liners worked great for a couple hundred miles then sure enough I got a flat that the liners caused. I only got a flat on one tire, but upon inspection the other tire wasn't far behind. After that I put on some Schwalbe Marathon green guard tires (about 600-800 miles ago) and haven't had a flat since, and they still look almost new. I was a slow learner but I am now a firm believer in spending a bit more money on tires for any daily rider bicycle. Apparently some people have good luck with the liners but I don't know how, maybe the Tuffy's are better, maybe they run a different air pressure or ride on different terrain, I don't know, but I doubt I'll ever use them again.

IMO, tire liners work best with cheaper tires. The cheaper the tire, the more you'll have the need for a tire liner.

ritchey speed max cross because I like the tread and longevity, with Mr Tuffys because goat heads will go right through a Ritchey. I have learned to go one size up on the tire liners, take your time installing them and all will be well. Which isn't to say that they are better than some of the tires listed above, it is one of those things like clipless or drop bars, whatever works best for you.

Also in Colorado Springs. Goat head hell. Put tire liners on the road bike last year, problem solved. Put them on the MTB commuter with road tires this year problem solved. I notice them more on the 1.75" MTB than on the road bike (700x32). I also notice them more in the cold, a sort of "firmness".

When I buy a new bike, the OEM tires are cheap and flat prone. Alot of people just discard them or "put them away" for another season that never quite happens. What I'll do is put the tire liner in the rear wheel ONLY thus limiting my exposure to the dreaded pinch flat.

Or, just have dealer upgrade the tires on your new bike, and not have to hang the old ones up somewhere..

they should give you $ credit for the old-new tires.

Tires like schawalbe marathon plus include the same sort of polymr as tire liners in the casing.

so no scrub punctures from the end of the strip of tire liner.

Until they wear out. Then you throw away the liner that is built into the tire. And, if the tire is poorly constructed, you can experience this



I hit a small rock on a downhill in Kentucky and split the outer tread from the liner. The tire had a significant wobble and bulge to it. It only had a couple of hundred miles on it (bought it in Cincinnati).

I've been using Mr. Tuffys for 25 to 30 years and I've experienced only one or 2 wear flats in all that time. And I have Tuffys that are 15 to 20 years old. They never wear out.

I've always been a believer in the but I'm more so after a ride I did a few years ago. I had to ride through goat head hell in southern Colorado with 3 other cyclists. We had 27 flats in a 16 mile mountain bike trip. One of our group got 20 flats without any kind of liner. One of them got 6 flats with tubeless and my wife got one flat because I forgot to put the liner back in one of her tires. I did the whole ride without a flat. Granted there aren't many mountain bike tires with built in liners but if the liner can stand up to that ride, it can stand up to most anything.

+1. I use a liner on the rear wheel of a few bikes, and all around on my MTBs. Great product.

I ran over a roofing nail one night around town. Half the length of the nail was embedded in my Marathon "greengard" tire. I assumed I was going to get a flat but nothing happened. I'm assuming my tire liner stopped the nail. It was really unbelievable. Put me down for a "believer". No flats in two years of using them. I run over lots of urban crap everyday. I originally bought them for my tour in goat head country and they worked.

I used Mr. Tuffy's for many miles. But sometimes they can cause flat spots. I don't know why.

I was using them with Marathons. I don't any more. Just Marathons. Been good for couple thousand miles, no problems. Even when I rode past 3 scrap yards and a lots of detris.

Running a plus on back, but will stick with plain green guards from now on.

Down here in New Mexico it is the goathead capital of the world. In fall, I use Mr Tuffy's, Stans Sealant and Continental Super Sport Plus tires. It may sound like overkill...I have never had a puncture or a flat during the atomic goathead season. After goathead season is passed I use Stans and SS+ tires. Mr Tuffy's work great but at 110-120 psi they present too much of a risk and hazard for commuting daily.

I bought some "puncture resistant" tubes. They are super thick and weigh as much as the tire. They are horrible, the bike rode like a rock. So, what I did was to make tire liners out of them, slitting the tube all the way around using scissors, then cutting narrow strips. I have gotten goathead flats with regular tire liners but not with these.

I use kevlar bead tires and mr tuffy's. With only kevlar bead I'd get at least a flat a month, sometimes much more, with both I get a flat a year or so. I did have an issue once with mr tuffy's causing flats. They were about 4 years old and brittle around the edges. Now I run a 23 mr tuffy on 25/28 tires. no issues.

Another +1 for Mr Tuffy -- but I've never tried any other liners, they could all be good for all I know. The only way I flat anymore is where the base of the valve stem is rubbed raw by the rim hole.

I have used Slime liners. They were like having razor blades in the tire. Wore a hole in the tube in a round trip to work...20 miles.

stop flats tire liners

I been using stop flats for about 2800 miles( 2 seasons for me) with my forte Kevlar belted, slick tires 700cx35.
nock on wood zero flats.
I know someone going to say it's "overkill" to use liners with Kevlar belted tires.
when I ride I go min. of 15 mile to a max of 45 mile. I don't plan to walk.
I must say they were installed by my lbs.,with some difficulty since they had no tape to hold them in place.
maybe when I need a change of tires I might give Panarace's "Flat-Away" a shot because of the Kevlar and tape. maybe earlier to install.
I ride mup trails in my area which a in fair to poor condition in many places.
tons of tree bumps across the paths an some broken glass in some areas.
