Homage to NYC Transportation Director

Nice article on the hyphenated bikeshare and bike lane champion here.

Also, a rough tally of Bloomberg's out-of-pocket expenses during his reign in this NY Times article.

The comments are interesting.......... running significantly against cyclists and the associated changes instituted by the commissioner. Something for those of us who support construction of additional bike friendly infrastructure to be aware of - most of the pushback is coming in response to bikers not obeying the traffic laws.

Going forward we can either be ambassadors - or we can whine about why more bike lanes aren't constructed.

I don't want more bike lanes. NYC has 6,000 miles of road-way. Enough to take a driver to every single address in the Metro Area. Is that ever going to happen for bikes? A separate bicycle friendly infrastructure that allows a cyclist to reach every single address in the Metro Area in safety? Surely the answer is to promote education and awareness in the driving public that bicycles have a valid place in the traffic stream? And, yes, motorists fume when bikes run lights. Not because its not safe, in decades of doing it and seeing it done I haven't ever seen anyone hit running a light. I have seen someone hit while running with the light. That happens much more often, but no one gets upset about that. So... nice try but: FAIL. It isn't because bikes run lights that more bike lanes don't get built. Its because there isn't money for roads PERIOD, why bike lanes don't get built. You be an ambassador. That's what ambassadors are for. To keep the heat off the saddle warmers of the few, the proud, the brave, who get 'r done with dispatch and panache. You're supposed to make excuses for our behavior. Maybe even suggest modifications to the vehicle code that allow some judicious alternative stoplight behavior. Go on, give it a try. Or don't. Banzai!!

Thanks for the links, especially the second one--very interesting! I like what Bloomberg has done for NYC.

Here's a TED talk by her on the overall direction of her programs, not just bike-related:
