45F / 7C and strong head and crosswinds. I know many of you ride in much colder conditions but I am already feeling the chill.

First sub-freezing ride since last winter: 31F when I left. But I did like that it was light when I left at 7am.
I stopped along the way for this photo. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=415538 |
First freezing temperature commute of the fall, and it felt great to me. I like the cold, and prefer weather like this over hot, humid days.
I had a lot of good excuses to drive today but felt like riding because I was out of town without a bike all weekend. We are having a chili cookoff at work today, and I had to carry a big patch of chili with a storage container in my seatbag. The food would have easily fit in my panniers on my touring bike, but it is temporarily out of the commuting rotation. |
Temp was about 35F when I left. I overdressed a bit, but wasn't too sweaty when I reached work.
I must have put on my invisibility cloak and not realized it. First a driver zoomed past to reach a stop sign first, and then sat there with no cross traffic coming, looking through some papers on the passenger seat. I yelled something and she seemed surprised to see me. Next, an old guy decides to turn right on red when I had the green. He saw me at the last minute and jammed on the brakes. Then my ride was fine until I reached the final two miles. It was now time for distracted drivers. Too busy on the phone to notice the light had changed, too busy eating breakfast to notice that the light had changed, and too busy doing who-knows-what to realize that the road was closed. Maybe it's the time change (DST ended yesterday)? |
Pretty chilly in the mid 40's, but no problems really. Nice to have daylight when I leave the house. Almost felt like I was running late. :P Still slow as usual, though.
Had to switch back to my old original rear tire again yesterday after I found my repaired Conti GP 4S tire flat again. Sucks. I hate wire bead tires. :( |
Chillier than normal at 45F. For a Californian that's the sort of weather that makes you wonder if your bike commute is gonna go the way of the Donner Party, frozen to death on the roadside being run over repeatedly by snowplows. It felt like that anyway. I realize you Midwesterners would call it balmy.
More importantly I made two mission critical work deliveries on my way home. So critical in fact that the recipients were confused about who I was and what I was delivering. But the important thing was that this made me a bicycle messenger if just for the day. Now I can lay that dream to rest and years from now pine about "the old days, freezing my fingers off in 45F weather on my death-defying courier route" (it was 95% MUP). |

It was dark, rainy, and in the mid-40s F. But waiting for nice days to ride hasn't been working for me lately. So I'm on a new quest to try to convince myself that I like rain, or at least don't mind it. My rain gear works though I can't go slowly enough up my hills to not get pretty sweaty until the temps get below 40. Showers Pass Elite jacket and some Gore pants. I like the Head gloves I get at Costco because they're warm even when they get wet.
I'm hoping for two days of riding this week and one day of running. I would like that to be my normal pattern now that my fall race is past and I don't need to run so often. |
Wasn't sure if I was going to ride today since I'm recovering from a trail race this past weekend. Decided to pedal home after riding my motorcycle to work. The weather was perfect. Had a nice tail wind which allowed me to relax and just enjoy the ride. Felt like I barely pedaled the 14 miles home. This turned out to be one of my best commutes this fall. Walked my bike the last half mile up a hill which felt good to my tired legs. Not looking forward to the rain and cooler weather later this week.

You're my hero. Don't forget to add that it was uphill both ways.

My first ride in since mid October, there is no school today so hence no child to get off to school. The ride was great! I loved every minute of it, even the cold air was nice today!
|
Cool (6C/43F), damp but only a slight breeze. Forecast for the week is daily highs just a few degrees above freezing and lows at or below freezing. Depending on snow/rain, I may or may not ride it as the road conditions could become treacherous for me.

Another beautiful day, with morning temps in the upper 30s and afternoon high supposed to reach about 70. First afternoon commute in the dark in quite a while yesterday, and I don't like it. Traffic is much heavier on my commute route in the afternoons, and once daylight savings ends I am riding in the dark most of the way home among lots of cars and trucks. I was lit up like a Christmas tree, however, with 3 taillights and 2 headlights.
Got my first look at my new commuter-touring frame, which I ordered through my local bike shop. It's a Soma Saga in British Racing green. I'm going to have it built up with parts from two different bikes, changing my "stable" around. My current touring bike, a Bob Jackson, will become my main commuter, and I'll be swapping the triple crankset and derailleurs from it to the Saga, as well as the 36-spoke wheels. The BJ will be rebuilt with a compact double crank and derailleurs from my current main commuter, a Gunnar Crosshairs, which I plan to sell. My reasons for switching is the Bob Jackson does not not have enough clearance for the larger tires and fenders I want for touring. However, the BJ is a great bike and will make a great commuter -- which is what I originally got it for -- and it fits me much better than the Gunnar. The Gunnar has to go because I don't have the garage space, or parts, for another bike. |
I drove today. Frost is sneaking up the windshield. That actually made me happy because soon it won't be any faster for me to drive than ride, with the 10-15 minutes it will take to scrape and warm up the car. I love having ANY extrinsic motivation to get me to ride.

Like Tarwheel, it got dark fast for me last night. I leave right at 5pm and am usually home by 5:45. It was getting pretty dark by 5:25/:30. And it's only going to keep getting darker earlier for about 7 more weeks.
Compared to yesterday morning's 31F, today's 41F felt warm. I do like the light in the mornings being lighter and have been leaving a bit earlier and getting an extra mile or so in on the way to work. Forgot to mention that yesterday I saw 2 deer on the MUP I sometimes take. They were quite courteous though stepped out of the way far before I got close to them. |
Hard to tell those outside of southern California that I was cold, but I was....sniffles non stop, average times for the ride, but I am thinking of switching to a heavier jacket for tomorrow's ride if it doesn't get warmer.

Warmed up enough yesterday that I was able to commute home in just shorts and jersey, but I did don the arm warmers. Pretty nice ride, even though the latter half was in darkness. I didn't mind it much, though, since I have good lights. Had a decent tail wind also which was nice.
I was sneezing and sniffling most of the day yesterday (nose running like water on the bike, both morning and evening), so I took some nighttime meds when I got home, passed out about 9:30 and got a good night's sleep. Felt better today, and this morning it was over 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. Nose still running some during the commute but not nearly as much. This time I went in shorts and jersey, with a long-sleeve tech shirt underneath. I like not having to get all gussied up with wool socks, tights, multiple layers, full-finger gloves, etc etc. Not sure how long this will last. Did have a fair amount of headwind today. Should have a tail wind again this afternoon, and will be stopping off to vote as well. |
Rode to the polls, which was at the neighborhood elementary school, so I locked up my bike next to a bunch of BMXs and kid cruiser bikes. Then rode to work. My commute route takes me along Capitol Park. Very little traffic since most legislative staffers are out doing GOTV stuff.
|
On my way back from class I watched a cyclist almost run into a family of three on the pedestrian side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The idiot decided to pass me as I began to pass someone else. I yelled on your right he didn't and when I moved to the right which forced him to almost swerved into the family.

Wet and windy and not getting any better

Nice and rain-free today which was a treat. There are still massive lakes everywhere from yesterday. Quite warm for this time of year, too... I haven't had to pull out the merino stuff yet.

Today was my shortest commute ever! I had scheduled to get the car shampooed. I drove and dropped off my son and his bike seat. I then dropped the car off and rode 6.2 km to work in 13 minutes (15 total). It was almost completely downhill, I still was sweaty.
I was planning them to be done at 6 and I get off at 5. I was going to bike the 11 km to get my son then about 6 km back for the car. But they were done and said I could get it first, so I did. 6.2 km uphill in 16 minutes (19 total). Barely 12 km for the day and that is just over my one way short route. It was weird I like my longer commute and I miss it and I look forward to it tomorrow. The best part, my son was sad we didn't ride. The car was still damp when I got it so I blasted the heat and we drove home in a sauna. It is nice and clean and my wife will be happy (she requested it since her allergies have been bothering her in it). |
no commuting last night.worked my regular shift at school then had ot due to voting at my school.went to go home after a 15 + hour day. front tire was flat:(.checked it out and found a thorn init.:( so i started to walk to girlfriends text her that i was going to be longer as i had a flat and was walking.sweetheart she is(most of time) she got out of bed and picked me up:).so no commute this a.m. off to bike shop this afternoon as i do not have a tube repair kit .probably will have to leave it so i guess on to the MTB for a day or two. wish my project bike was completed have all the parts just need to assemble. i got bottom bracket and crank on. well hope everyone had a nice commute this a.m.

Cool (2C/36F) and very damp at first (felt more of a chill at the start than I have for a while) but I warmed up. Decided to extend my route slightly by circling the university before heading to me office building, added about 2km (1.5mi) to the route and 22m (72ft) inclines for a little bit of hill work at the end.
